Environmental Engineering text

This is an excellent textbook for anyone taking an introductory graduate level Environmental Engineering course. For what the professor doesn't mention in the lecture, the textbook will give you. Also, the authors have a creative way of presenting the material, not to mention a sense of humor. I highly recommend this textbook. Oh, did I mention I used this textbook for a graduate level introductory envr. engr. course, and I'm not even an engineer. Awesome text,... if that's possible?!

useful info, hard to navigate

This book definitely contains useful information, however I was extremely annoyed whenever I had to use it because there is no chapter indicator on any of the pages. I'll be working on one of the end of chapter problems, want to look something up, and instead of being able to easily flip back to the beginning of the chapter you almost have to look it up in the table of contents because it's impossible to tell where in the chapter you are due to lack of labeling. Very, very irritating and time consuming.

Yes, this is the international version, but there is no difference between this and the hardcover. All page numbers, units, and sample problems are exactly the same. I own both versions and it is definitely worth the savings to get the paperback.

Best Book Ever!!!!!

I have been looking some time now for a book for my son that tells him about having a new baby. I really like how this book tells what all a new baby can't do yet (ex. new babies can't talk, walk, play with toys yet, and can't eat pizza or ice cream). Then the book goes on to tell what babies can do (ex. Babies like to drink milk, stay warm and cozy, and best of all the baby loves to look at me because I'm the big brother!). The book makes the brother of the baby feel special because the book explains to them that they are a big boy and a new brother. It lets them know that they can help mommy and daddy with the baby! My son is only 2 1/2 but loves this book more than I thought he would. He now talks about can't waiting for his new baby to get here. Now He tells everyone that he is a big brother, my little guy is just so proud of this! This is a very well writen book, easy to understand even for a 2 year old. As a new mom to be I also love this book, it helps explain things that I wasn't sure how to.

Updated version better than original

This updated version, illustrated by Rosalinda Kightley, is better than the original. The original never showed the mother holding the baby whereas the new version does, a couple of times. Neither version shows breastfeeding but the new version cuts back on the bottle feeding at least. My son loves this book and we have tried many. He is 28 months old and most books are too old for him or too detailed to capture his attention. We first borrowed this book from the library, along with all of the others we've tried, and had to buy it after renewing it 3 times. I also like the fact that the book does not address negative feelings the older sibling may have. We'll cross that bridge when we come to it; why give him any ideas? Another great choice on this subject is On Mother's Lap by Ann Herbert Scott. My son also loves the Sesame Street video Three Bears and a New Baby. If you are looking for a parenting book for yourself on this subject, try Welcoming Your Second Baby, by Vicky Lansky or Keys to Preparing and Caring for Your Second Child, by Meg Zweiback. Avoid the book From One Child to Two, by Judy Dunn. Dunn's book was so indecisive and negative, we might not be having another child after reading it if I hadn't already been pregnant.

If you type in the programs in this book and run them as you go along, you’ll learn even more. Writing programs is much more difficult than reading them, and the first step is just letting your fingers get used to typing in the programs and getting rid of the small syntax errors that inevitably occur. As you get deeper into the book, you’ll be writing programs that are pretty tricky to write in most other languages-- but hopefully you won’t realize this. Soon you’ll be writing distributed programs. This is when the fun starts...

For beginners and experts alike

I first learned Erlang reading Joe Armstrong's Programming Erlang: Software for a Concurrent World book in 2008, and started working fulltime with the language that year. As each major book on the language came out I read them in turn, and with each book I've picked up new things. This book is no exception.

I first encountered some of the Learn You Some Erlang contents via the web page in 2010, but only read the first few chapters and at that point I didn't see much other than a novel take on the basics of the language. I recommended the website to new Erlang developers but didn't read it myself until the book was finished.

Upon reading the completed work, I found that Fred Hebert has not only covered the basics of the language and its syntax, but many of the details which make Erlang *the* language to build distributed, fault-tolerant systems. I learned many new things about OTP behaviours, releases, eunit and common test as well as many other corners of the language and runtime.

Fred Hebert's breadth of knowledge, attention to detail, sly wit and many entertaining examples give everyone from the beginner, to the expert something to think about and learn from in this book. I recommend it to anyone looking to learn more about the exciting world of Erlang.

I'll call this the new canonical book on Erlang

Functional programming is not new, but it is becoming popular once again. For this reason, in my last book review, I talked about a Lisp book and this review will cover a book on Erlang. Functional programming treats computation differently from other programming languages. Here, computation is done by evaluating mathematical functions. State and mutable data are avoided. Most of this is rooted in lambda calculus, in which everything is a function (yes, I'm simplifying, but this is a short review). Even if you prefer to use a different programming style, learning a functional language is beneficial to expand your skills and your ability to think of a problem in multiple ways, which often leads to more elegant and human-readable solutions.

One of the things I really admire and appreciate about the author is that he provides a great example to others. So often, budding programmers and computer scientists feel intimidated by functional programming, somehow believing that they need to study for years and earn a higher level computer science degree before they even make the attempt. H�bert is a self-taught programmer and also the author of one of (perhaps the) most respected and used Erlang tutorials out there, on which this book is based and shares a title. He was named Erlang user of the year for 2012. H�bert proves that really bright people can learn and use and teach complicated things, and you can do so without learning it in a university. So, put aside the intimidation and press on!

This book covers all the basics of language and syntax, basic functional programming concepts and techniques. It covers the hot Erlang topics of today, too, stuff like concurrency and distributed computing. One thing I love is that as the book discusses these things, it does so without the typical hype and over-zealousness that often accompanies Erlang presentations and discussions. In fact, there is an amusing series of information box notes, each titled "Don't Drink Too Much Kool-Aid," that give a welcome, balanced view of various features, praises, and criticisms of Erlang. Each of these shows a grounding in reality that comes from real-world use.

This is a serious book filled with quality discussions, clear writing, interesting and useful examples, and an occasional bit of whimsy. The book isn't playful like Land of Lisp or original Python documentation, but it isn't dry and boring or overly academic, either. This is an accessible, practical book that the real-world programmer who is considering Erlang will find useful.

Excellent Unusual Book About An Excellent Unusual Language

A lighthearted yet excellent and comprehensive book about a most unusual yet powerful language. For those who don't know of Erlang it is a declarative, functional language with features to support fault tolerance, parallelism, distributed processing, efficient recursion, and hot code swapping. This language is available for multiple platforms including, Windows, Linux and Macintosh as well as being increasingly available for embedded platforms like Raspberry Pi and Beaglebone.

Learning a language which while extremely powerful, and having many features is unusual in syntax and approach (two important idiosyncracies of Erlang include a syntax largely based upon Prolog and almost all data types being immutable--e.g., there are no variables in the classic sense) requires a special sort of text which is certainly the case with Hebert's "Learn You Some Erlang for Great Good!" This excellent and thorough exposition trully meets the needs of a powerful yet highly unusual language.

Special feautures of the text which go along with special features of the Erlang language include: excell ent and humorous examples and cartoon illustrations, "don't drink too much kool-aid" footnotes which indicate drawbacks and gotcha's of the language, and irreverent yet important comments such as a chapter title of "Types (or lack thereof)" and "you should leave all you know about 'ifs' at the door." This is also a very complete treatment of the language and supplemental features and libraries such as the OTP framework and Mnesia database.

I highly recommend this humorous and excellent treatment of an idiosyncratic yet powerful and fault tolerant language.
