A Novel that Must Be Watched!

Graham Holderness does not need any introduction for the Shakespeare-savvy reader, but those aspects of his latest novel that make it a very special work of fiction must definitely be highlighted. On 25 September 2015, only months before the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare's death, Holderness's "historical fantasy" (as he describes his novel) brought the Bard back from the dead as a vampire hunter. On a different descriptive frame, however, it would not be wrong to call Black and Deep Desires a “cinematic novel.” The novel’s diary-like narrative technique, which is obviously a deliberate replication of the epistolary style in Bram Stoker's Dracula, its action, and the vivid imagery Holderness creates in this gripping story provoke comparison not with other fantasy novels but with screen productions. In the way it so naturally brings together the historical, political, and religious context of the Gun Power Plot with Stoker's Dracula, with Shakespeare's own life and works, and with several other well-known literary and historical figures, I think Holderness’s novel belongs in the order of screen productions like The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003) and the more recent Showtime TV show Penny Dreadful (2014). My natural expectation, therefore, is to see this fascinating novel made into a film in the near future, because it really should.
In case the possible presumption from reading the blurbs is that the novel’s story is a combination of the films Shakespeare in Love (1998) and V for Vendetta (2005), nothing can be further away from what Black and Deeps Desires really is than that presumption. The plot of Holderness's novel is more explosive than Guy Fawkes's plot. In fact, perhaps the best description of this novel is to be found within its own lines: "Some kind of strange and fatal lover's kiss."

A thrilling, dark and romantic novel

A colleague recommended this book to me and I am glad I investigated it. I am a lover of Shakespeare and I am partial to a great vampire tale.
At first glance, it's a strange combination but the author, Graham Holderness, weaves an exciting and fantastical story with a good dose of historical interest and fact. I would describe it as a thrilling, dark and romantic novel. I really enjoyed the author's writing style. Highly recommended. In addition, I looked into the author, and he seems to be a leading academic in the field of Shakespeare.

Historical fiction-based fun -- with Shakespeare and vampires!

This book is really more William Shakespeare than Vampire Hunter. It’s grounded and informed by the political era in Europe in Shakespeare’s lifetime. It has something for the history aficionados, and it has vampire stuff for the vampire fans, if they skip over long passages about British politics.

It’s historical fiction that stars William Shakespeare as a reluctant hero. He is embroiled in the Gunpowder Plot of 1605 that intended to blow up the House of Lords. That was a real thing. The author just adds vampires.

This book fashions an adventure out of the stuff we studied in high school. It works in references to Shakespeare’s plays in such a way that I feel as if I am a learned intellectual. Beyond the references and the vampires, it’s a thrilling caper.

I think perhaps $3 or $4 would be more appropriate for this short book that is more like a how to make wine pamphlet. It's useful, but very small and somewhat overpriced. Also there is approx 2.5 inches of white space all around the type to make the book appear larger than it really is. It may be very helpful, will update my review based on content if it packs a punch content-wise.

Straightforward and clear structure. I’ve never thought that I can make wine by my own hand. That’s amazing! But I will try it after prepare enough equipment as list in book. It guide step by step instruction to walk you through the entire process of making wine. I love Zinfandel Wine, so it’s wonderful if can do it. Recommend this book for one who want to make wine by yourself.

A short and useful starter guide

This book contains all the necessary information to make your own wine distilled (no pun intended) into a dense package. It goes over all of the gear you will need to make your own wine (which is actually pretty cheap) and it contains a few good recipies. I am excited to try out the Syrah recipe out since it is my girlfriends favorite type of wine.

Dr. Johnson's success in the classroom and in this amazing review text is the way in which he weaves the facts together, presents them in a concise fashion, and places them in the perfect clinical context.

Various human ailments and diseases, congenital or acquired, from retinoblastoma to hereditary spherocytosis are presented in line with anatomical subject matter. For example, the histology and cell biology portion of this anatomy review begins with a clinical scenario of repeated respiratory tract infections and thick mucous secretions in a young patient. From there, a series of questions drawing upon various levels of understanding are presented. No worries if you miss any question, because each series of question items is followed by an in-depth organized mini-tutorial with answers! The explanations are organized to provide as much detail as you the student needs. Generally, each clinical scenario is deciphered as to epidemiology, molecular genetics, in-depth anatomical review of essential elements, and a conclusive paragraph with more fascinating details if time permits. It is this presentation of the material in a sound clinical and molecular genetic fashion that really sets this review text apart from the others out there!

The evolution of the human, from embryo to fetus to neonate is so illustratively dissected. Topics ranging from ectopic pregnancies to pharyngeal arch malformations, and the most common congenital anomalies (trisomy 13, 18, 21) are discussed with brevity and clarity to get the main trigger points across. Importantly, any review text must not only explain and get across the common principles of a concept, but also highlight the subtleties that may be overlooked by students studying for lengthy examinations such as the USMLE. This is exactly what Dr. Johnson's anatomy review does throughout the chapters. For instance, pointing out to students that while an ectopic pregnancy is defined as "anywhere outside the uterine cavity," placenta previa is not an ectopic pregnancy due to the fact that both placenta and fetus are "within the uterus."

The topic of neural tube defects is re-introduced to students with a well-known example of encephalocele shown with ultrasonography. Next, based on that example appropriate diagnostic texts are highlighted. With this specific example, the module also presents variants of NTDs with their clinical severity. The ability to connect significance medically based on structure/functional relationships is clearly without question exemplary in this book. The author's really drill the body's inter-connectedness by addressing how everything works together. It is spectacular that while brevity is maintained the material is solid and effectual for developing a strong background as a future physician. How is this accomplished? Seemingly by the author's ability to understand what is really important to physicians in a broad sense and then working backwards to give the necessary insight to explain what things mean to physician's patients in terms of management, treatment and prognosis.

What's the difference between a tumor above or below the pectinate line? As the author's show, because of the different derivations of the tissue above and below the pectinate line (endoderm vs. ectoderm) the same cancer can present differently with an exclusive prognosis of its own. So given the cancer's origin, it could be clinically silent, painless, and more detrimental based strictly on location. You need to read this interesting case to find out exactly what I'm talking about.

The module on Gross Anatomy does a really terrific job of making anatomy simple to understand with the use of figures and diagrams including labels that put structures/organs into perspective with necessary and sufficient review. Recall of anatomical structures is repeatedly questioned. Certain questions draw from the figures and test your understanding of regional and surface anatomy. Importantly, as throughout the review book, the significance of the body's connections, in this case lymphatic drainage, is accentuated with relevance to disease location/nature. One of the strongest aspects of the anatomy section is the illumination of the workings of the brachial plexus, divided into upper and lower brachial plexus injuries. The authors present ten sites of injury within the plexus supported with excellent diagrams that explain clinically important injuries. Moreover, the muscles of the upper/lower extremities, many in number, are presented in an easy to learn fashion. Diagrams of the brachial plexus and sources of innervation with the muscles involved are presented systematically, sprinkled with clinical scenarios to flavor things up. This section proved to be very insightful and suites those interested in a through review of this important anatomical landmark.

The Neuroanatomy chapter was a splendid delight because it was able to bring together everything that I'd learned in neuroanatomy. The inclusion of sagittal and coronal MRIs (labeled) of the human brain, with accompanying drawings of the intact brain really helped this section flow with ease and enjoyment. What I found very satisfying educationally was the depiction of spinal cord lesions such as the famous Brown-S�quard syndrome, with emphasis of major neurological findings of this and many more abnormalities. The neuroanatomy section will give medical students a very sturdy base to prepare for the boards.

In closing, I would have to say this anatomy review book is a really worthy addition to any physician's library. It is one I would recommend to any colleague of mine. It really has to do with the writer's who have an extensive background in the sciences and the practice of medicine. Given that the future of medicine is personalized: placing the entire genome of a patient on a tiny microchip, I would definitely recommend this text to current medical students preparing for USMLE Step 1 and to physicians already in the field to enhance their understanding of medicine as it is becoming.

Practical - Actionable

As a psychotherapist with a personal Buddhist practice, I've likely read or own almost every book on Amazon that's related to Buddhism and Psychotherapy. I pre-ordered "Buddhist Psychotherapy" by Matthias Ennenbach almost 6 months ago and had almost forgotten about it until I got the shipment notice.

While many books on the subject have been interesting, very few have actually had clear, concise, actionable information that could be put to use with a client. This book does not fall into that category. If you're a therapist interested in integrating a Buddhist worldview into your practice, this book is a fantastic place to start. It's "fundamentals" are well thought out and I find myself nodding in agreement with both his take on Buddhism and it's relationship to psychotherapy. Excellent book.

The author is German and this book is recently translated into English. With 12 or more people interested in learning "Buddhist Psychotherapy" from him, he'd be willing to do a 10-day training in the U.S. I'm on the list already and if you find yourself nodding in agreement with the author while reading this book, email him and let him know you'd be interested in doing a training in the U.S. too. In the meantime, the book is a great place to start.

This Buddhist Psychotherapiy shows a lot of important Application possibilities. It's a very positive Psychology. and the book is easy and entertaining to read. A Must for every Therapist and a gift for every reader.

Ennenbach shows the non-religious sources of Buddhism which are so extremly usefull in Psychotherapy. We can see all the central buddhist testifies as concrete suggestions and techniques. This book helped me to understood Buddhism as a universal help, not as a asian religion. Buddha was not looking for the gods of his religion, he was looking for the way to stop suffering. Like our Therapist today. And Ennenbach published a systematic work, how this can work....

The use of experts to apply the methodologies contained in this document is encouraged. The information contained herein will assist in the planning and design of shelters that may be constructed outside or within dwellings or public buildings. These safe rooms will protect occupants from a variety of hazards, including debris impact, accidental or intentional explosive detonation, and the accidental or intentional release of a toxic substance into the air. Safe rooms may also be designed to protect individuals from assaults and attempted kidnapping, which requires design features to resist forced entry and ballistic impact. This covers a range of protective options, from low-cost expedient protection (what is commonly referred to as sheltering-in-place) to safe rooms ventilated and pressurized with air purified by ultra-high-efficiency filters. These safe rooms protect against toxic gases, vapors, and aerosols (finely divided solid or liquid particles). This guidance focuses on safe rooms as standby systems, ones that do not provide protection on a continuous basis. To employ a standby system requires warning based on knowledge that a hazardous condition exists or is imminent. Protection is initiated as a result of warnings from civil authorities about a release of hazardous materials, visible or audible indications of a release (e.g., explosion or fire), the odor of a chemical agent, or observed symptoms of exposure in people. Although there are automatic detectors for chemical agents, such detectors are expensive and limited in the number of agents that can be reliably detected. Furthermore, at this point in time, these detectors take too long to identify the agent to be useful in making decisions in response to an attack. Similarly, an explosive vehicle or suicide bomber attack rarely provides advance warning; therefore, the shelter is most likely to be used after the fact to protect occupants until it is safe to evacuate the building. Two different types of shelters may be considered for emergency use, standalone shelters and internal shelters. A standalone shelter is a separate building (i.e., not within or attached to any other building) that is designed and constructed to withstand the range of natural and manmade hazards. An internal shelter is a specially designed and constructed room or area within or attached to a larger building that is structurally independent of the larger building and is able to withstand the range of natural and manmade hazards. Both standalone and internal shelters are intended to provide emergency refuge for occupants of commercial office buildings, school buildings, hospitals, apartment buildings, and private homes from the hazards resulting from a wide variety of extreme events. The shelters may be used during natural disasters following the warning that an explosive device may be activated, the discovery of an explosive device, or until safe evacuation is established following the detonation of an explosive device or the release of a toxic substance via an intentional aerosol attack or an industrial accident. Standalone community shelters may be constructed in neighborhoods where existing homes lack shelters. Community shelters may be intended for use by the occupants of buildings they are constructed within or near, or they may be intended for use by the residents of surrounding or nearby neighborhoods or designated areas.

What a beautifully written Christian book for new Dads. I gave one each to my own grandson who was a new dad, and one to my grand daughter's husband, who was a new dad, also! They both told me how they knew most of everything in the books, but appreciated the reminders! Both boys have been raised in the church, but a little nudge never hurts!!!
