This'll swash your buckles . . .

I really wanted to like this book. I've read several of Ms. Laurens Regency novels and thoroughly enjoyed them; this, however, is a much larger book -- both in size and scope. Then I got into it, and I thought, Oh, no! Not another spunky, young, heroine who brings the mature hero to his knees, because she knows better about everything than he does.
Oh, no! 'Tis not that way at all. This is a wonderful, swashbuckling period piece for (dare I say it?) intelligent readers of whichever sex who should happen to pick it up. It's quite true that Kit Cranmer is indeed a spunky heroine, but not so terribly young -- early to mid-twenties. And Captain Jack, now Lord Hendon, is indeed a mature hero, who brings Errol Flynn to mind in the blink of an eyelash.
Kit has come back from an unhappy stay in London to stay with her grandfather, and promptly wanders her way into a smuggling den based on the coast facing France. The captain, home from the wars, is enlisted in a war against the smuggling of spies, but of course, first he must discern those smugglers from the ordinary contraband variety.
Lots of laughs jump right off the pages of this delightful book, right along with sexual tension that is believable, for a pleasant change. And LOTS of it, plus the real thing. This is a very sexy book! Ms. Laurens deserves all the accolades she's accrued for this wonderful book, and I'll be part of the long line-up anxiously waiting for her next one.

Great Story - Highly Sensual

I've read most of Stephnie Laurens work and it's still a toss-up to me as to which hero is the sexiest. Up til now, it was Sebastian in the Devil's Bride (Bar Cynster series), but Captain Jack (aka Lord Hendon) takes my breath away. On a scale of 1-10 for sensuality this is definitely a 10!
Sensuality aside, I really liked the story! Lady Kit is fresh and alive. On a midnight ride,dressed as a lad, aboard her fabulous Arabian mare Delia, she inadvertently saves a small smugglers gang from being caught by the revenue men and becomes their leader, unbeknownest to them that she is a woman! After a few well devised and successful smuggling ventures, she runs into Captain Jack and becomes engaged with him in, of all things, a sword fight! Still disguised as a lad, Captain Jack is wondering why the slight lad is giving him uneasy thoughts.
Well, and so it goes. The story is really quite good. Quite a lot of interaction (sex) between the two main characters, once Captain Jack figures out who Young Kit is. I love the strength and arrogance of Captain Jack, who really has a way of taming the beautiful, wild and passionate Lady Kit - very steamy sex scenes.
If this was Ms. Laurens debut novel, it is no wonder she went on to such great success with her later entries! A definite keeper and one to be re-read and savoured again, and again.

Earlier Story

I love Stephanie Laurens but I haven't been able to do more than skim this book. It has been pointed out to me that this is a reprint and so was probably written before her wonderful Cynster series. If I had know that before I tried to read it I would have been more open to the book, since I have seen just in Stephanie Lauren's Cynster series how her writing style has improved. Don't read it if you are expecting a book like On A Wild Night or All About Love. You should be able to read it, and probably enjoy it, if you realize from the start that this is an earlier story in her writing life. Some of the other reviews I have read about this book have pointed out that there is very little talking between characters. You read most of the story in their thoughts. I agree with this and it may have been why I had difficulty reading it, since most of what I enjoy is the verbal interaction between characters.

What is there really to say if anyone feels for the brothers and there mates like I did then getting to read a glimpses into the life's is great this was a info story I'm glad that toni dose this because some character's kind of become real to you so every so often hearing what's going on with there lives is awesome.

I really enjoyed this series as with all good series I hate to see it end. I am glad the author gave us this extra book to see how everything turned out it was well written with no errors I felt a connection with all the brothers and their mates and was really happy to finally have a gay series with loving parents

Facinating travel through Hell!

I had never read Dante's Inferno before, even in college, and always wished I had. As a big horror/thriller/drama fan, Dante is often referenced and used as a structure for many similar novels. I was lucky to find this version, since obviously, the original is in Italian, and most English-translations are still full of words that we simply don't use anymore or understand. It does really help to have a healthy background on Roman/Greek history. This was the only thing I had some trouble with, as it has been many years since I studied this aspect of history. Due to all the famous Roman and Greek figures met along the way, and the references to this period, it will help other readers to maybe keep a history reference at hand if you also do not remember a lot of it.

Hell on Earth (in a good way)

A very easy to read edition of Dante's classic, but perhaps sometimes a little too easy.

On occasion, where other translators aren't sure what Dante meant, this version plunges in head first without ever letting the reader know that other readings are available. That is, no footnotes of any description.

That said, this modern English version of Longfellow's translation is ideal for sitting in a bar, glass of red wine in one hand, e-reader in the other, and enjoying Hell.

The saga of modern tourism has pretty much followed this pattern since the industry began: the search for the idyllic, the urge to tell others of the “Paradise found,” the subsequent mourning for “Paradise Lost.” Since David and Swami arrived in Bali in the late 1980s, a great deal has changed. Television, motor bikes, cars, computers, cellphones, ATMs, fancy restaurants, big hotels, boutiques, yoga centers and spas have proliferated. It’s tempting to say: “We are disappointed; maybe we made a mistake in returning!” It would be too easy to point the finger and place the blame. But of course when one assigns the blame, there are always three fingers pointing back at oneself. What to do? What can we say? Perhaps, “Bali is ruined, don’t bother coming,” or, “Bali is still wonderful, we’ll see you in Nuris for a Martini, or in the Kafe for a Turmeric liver cleanse.” Whatever you do, don’t blame us! OK? “The Monster That Ate Ubud” is the first episode in the adventures of Chuck Fung and Swami Shoeman. It explores the lighter side of life’s journeys through the tales of this inseparable pair of chumps. There is something very Asian (and particularly Balinese) about this set up. Although almost extinct in most of SE Asia, Shadow Puppetry (Wayang Kulit) is still a big deal in Bali. The stark black animation on a screen is employed by puppeteers (dalangs) to provide a magical and ritualistic enactment of the battle between the forces of good and evil, while delivering wry political and social commentary that may not be acceptable from the masses, but is deemed “fair play” from the mouths of puppets. There are always two clown puppets that deliver the play’s main message. These bozos embody all that is foolish in the human condition and allow the Balinese to laugh at themselves while contemplating ethical, spiritual and current political affairs. So popular are the clown puppets that the most famous puppeteer in Bali is known by the name of the two fools he created; “Ceng, Blong” as fans don’t recognize the name of the Dalang himself. (I would give you his name, but I can’t remember it!) In the telling this tale of our beloved adopted home – Bali – we have embraced this age-old technique. About the Author
A.G. 'Newmi' Newman Newmi was born Alan George Clare in London England. He grew up an only child in the East End with his Mum and step Dad Bill Newman, after whom he was renamed. Newmi was studying Philosophy at the University of Warwick when he received his first Sartori and promptly dropped out to see the world. In the early 1970s he bummed around Europe, hitch-hiked to India from Holland and spent almost two years exploring India, Nepal and Afghanistan, before moving to North America in late 1973. In 1988, Newmi travelled to Ubud and studied mask carving with Ida Bagus Anom and Ida Bagus Oka in the village of Mas. It was here that he ran into fellow mask nut David Trevelyan. For the next twenty-two years, Newmi returned to Bali every winter except 1994 when he studied Commedia Dell'Arte at Dell'Arte International in California and Commedia leather mask making in Padova Italy (his second Sartori was his study with Commedia Mask Maestro Donato Sartori, son of Amleto.) Spending more and more time in Bali, Newmi eventually moved to Ubud full time, where he now lives with his Balinese wife, Dayu Juni Newman and hangs out writing and drawing with his friend David Trevelyan. A world renowned mask maker, Newmi denies any resemblance to Swami Shoeman. David Trevelyan David Trevelyan was born and spent his formative years in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. In a family of four brothers and one sister, David was the rebellious one. He grew up in an active, fun loving environment. Whilst attending art school in Calgary, Alberta, David's interest in Native arts and culture and Eastern philosophy awakened. He moved to British Columbia, was smitten by the masks of the North Western Native peoples. David returned to Canada to begin his own commercial design company where he was Art Director for ten years. Burned out with commercial art, David started to explore S.E. Asia, first Thailand and then Ubud, Bali, where he first met Newmi. David began to produce wild sculptures at his new studio near Ubud. In the mid- to late 1990s, David began to experiment with digital photography, computer manipulated images and cyber arts. David now lives with his wife Rani just outside Ubud, where he continues to explore innovative contemporary expressions as an artist. These include hanging out with his buddy Newmi and co-creating all that is way fung and too shoe. David insists that baldness aside, there is no similarity between him and Chuck Fung.

Honestly, I loved this book so much that I bought tickets to Bali. I will be having martinis at Naughty Nuri's on Tuna Night in mid January 2011. I am looking forward to hanging with Chuck Fung and Newmi who we all know aren't real and are only characters in a novel...

EAT PAY LEAVE- Why We Loved this book!

As I read "The Monster that ate UBUD - A Guide to Enlightenment for the Serious Dim Bulb" it was soon clear to me that Newman and Trevelyan wrote this book with their tongues planted firmly in their cheeks.

These guys gleefully poke fun at the New Age crowd with a side jab at "Eat Pray Love", the book/movie that's spawned a "pilgrimage" of women of a certain age who are following that author's footsteps to Bali in droves to find love and enlightenment.- in fact, right to Ubud- the village where these two characters live.

And then there is their invention of "Fung Shoe", the art of putting things in the wrong place in a special way, plus, their `must have', "Strap-On Third Eye - Economic, Convenient Enlightenment for the Busy".

Obviously, these two characters see life in a `very special way', which is at times zany, irreverent, thought provoking and downright funny.

Their underlying message here is that too much of a good thing can lead to bad things, which is where the Monster comes in.

Lots of whacky drawings (reminiscent of famed underground cartoonist RJ Crumb) for people who like to look at pictures. (Tip: pay close attention to the witty lettering on the t-shirts.)

This books is sure to become a favorite of cynical young, graphic reading adults, `been there done that' hipsters and people who like to laugh at the absurdities of life.

Brilliant! Simply Brilliant!

I loved it!! 5 star entertainment!

I am amazed that these two dyslexic, attention deficit "Dim Bulbs" could come up with this bright-beam-stream of consciousness, actually put their thoughts and ramblings into words and, even more surprisingly, complete their mission.

This story is utterly insane! Just like real life. A saga of a real modern day, New Age Mutt and Jeff.

The main characters, Chuck and Swami, represent a couple of dudes that came to this island paradise in search of a place to live cheap and nurture their creative genius.

The yin/yang duo had a clue about the magic of the culture of Bali but were heretofore unaware of how easy it can be to walk one step over the line. Sweet Jeeez Sauce!
I felt riveted, nailed, glued to find out what was going to happen next.

I hope there's going to be a sequel.

Incredible artwork - fabulous story - comic genius - a very entertaining and almost true embellishment of real events and characters. I give this book an enthusiastic two big toes and two thumbs up!

LIfe is sexier under the Enlightenement of a "Serious Dim Bulb".
