About the Author

Margaret J. Barr is professor emeritus in the School of Education and Social Policy at Northwestern University. She received the Distinguished Achievement Award from the NASPA Foundation in 2012 and is the author of Budgets and Financial Management in Higher Education with George S. McClellan and Critical Issues for Student Affairs with Arthur Sandeen.

George S. McClellan is the vice chancellor for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management at Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne. McClellan is the editor of The Handbook for College Athletics and Recreation Management with Chris King and Donald L. Rockey, Jr. and The Handbook for Student Affairs Administration, Third Edition, with Jeremy Stringer. He writes a column in The Chronicle of Higher Education on career issues in student affairs.

Arthur Sandeen is a professor of educational leadership at the University of Florida. He received the John L. Blackburn Distinguished Service Award from the NASPA Foundation in 2014 and is the author of Enhancing Leadership in Colleges and Universities, Enhancing Student Engagement on Campus, and Improving Leadership in Student Affairs Administration.

Change is inevitable, but this book helps you manage it!

Change is inevitable and lately change has been all around in my workplace. With this in mind this book could not have come at a better time for me or for my division. I loved how the authors weaved in practical case studies that brought their points to life. This allowed me as a reader to see their ideas come to life and simpler to comprehend and compartmentalize. With that in mind I can tell that my division has some work to do, but this book makes you think and gives you plenty to do to be ready to take your division to the next step in the change that inevitably must occur.

I like the book and go with four stars for three reasons

* Exploitative pricing. It's a $40 book, the rest is "finance" and "R" premia. Don't push it, Wiley.

* Somewhat lacking editing. The author has done a good job, but blemishes remain. Two easy-to-spot examples are the ugly typesetting of code snippets and the where-did-this-come-from Section 2.4.

* The book takes R very seriously, but the author's choice to give complete listings means that much of the code on display is data manipulation; for "non-central" tasks, you only get a lead to a relevant package or function, not an actual usage example.

After brief introductions to R, financial time series, risk measures and mean-variance portfolio optimization, the book explores four subjects.

(70 pages) Approximation of stock-return distributions, primarily via the trio of generalized lambda, generalized hyperbolic and generalized extreme-value distributions.

(50 pages) The GARCH-copula returns-dependence model, whose discussion is preceded by discussion of GARCH and copulae.

(100 pages) Construction of a range of "optimal" portfolios, including a tweak on the Markowitz problem and recipes optimizing over alternative risk measures like VaR, CVaR, expected shortfall, drawdown, and (loosely) relative-to-benchmark loss.

(40 pages) Two variations on the Black-Litterman model, one due to Meucci (and implemented in R package BLCOP) and another proposed by the author. (This material is preceded by a survey of Box-Jenkins time-series models).

Sweet Love Story

So glad Candy wrote her story -- thus far. When she first met Ben at Yale, it's as if she's Anne of Green Gables. Gilbert's teasing her and she doesn't know why, in fact, she's quite irritated by it. But Candy continues to go to church with Ben, and she describes how her faith blossoms (in just two remarkably simple sentences), and how her heart melts when she confronts Ben about all the attention he's giving her.

This book is a must read, and hopefully there'll be sequel: A Doctor in the White House.

Got the book as a Christmas present and it arrived yesterday, and once I started it I could not put it down. Well written, inspirational, and filled with warmth, humor, and compassion. The Carsons are amazing people, yet their humility and decency are obvious. A great great book on life ! I think that they will excel at anything into which they put their efforts. Glad they are willing to work to help our country.

This book makes me have a better outlook on life

This was very positive and uplifting throughout. I read this in two days. It was hard to put this book down. Candy writes as though she is talking to you right next to you. It is as if she is sitting across the table from you, walking you through her home, or walking down the corridors of the hospital with you. Most of all, she is genuine and I marvel at how she has done so much. This book makes me have a better outlook on life. I wish I had known the Carsons. This book has so many surprises for me. I was in Hamden, CT when they are at Yale. I was in the U.S. Virgin Islands and also Delaware and spent much time in Baltimore. Candy even worked at the UI office and I did as well, in another state. I wish I had met them. What an inspiring couple!

Trish Witkowski is Chief Folding Fanatic at the online community foldfactory.com. She holds a bachelor of fine arts degree in graphic design and a Master of Science degree in Graphic Arts Publishing from Rochester Institute of Technology's School of Printing Management and Sciences.
