A Revised Version of an Inferior Test Prep Guide

When REA (Research & Education Association) released its initial version of GRE LITERATURE IN ENGLISH in 1989, I bought it to prepare myself for that test. I was not particularly impressed with the organization or the lack of suggestion as to how to best make use of the material presented. Still, authors Beard, Kennedy, Liftig, and Malek included six full length exams with explanations. That was 230 x 6 or 1,380 test prep questions. I took the test and scored middlingly. Years later, I learned to "psyche" out the test and was surprised to discover a new and supposedly updated version. In this newer version, Malek cuts down the number of tests from 6 to 3. Nearly every one of the regurgitated questions is a reprint from nearly 15 years ago, thus ensuring that this text does not reflect any of the major changes in test content during that time. What Malek does try is to emulate the far more successful paradign put out by the Princeton Review's CRACKING THE GRE LITERATURE by codifying the vast array of western literature: genres, timelines, book and author lists, literary terms, schools of literary criticism, etc. The problem is that Malek did not do half as thorough a job as the Princeton Review did. Malek does little more than to use an overly broad brush to skim a distressingly long list of required readings without giving any hint as how to best do that. True, neither did the Princeton Review, but at least the latter presented a methodology that was reasonable. This is not to say that Malek's updated text is useless. Anything, no matter how scant, that prepares you for a mind-numbing test has its uses, but if you insist on using Malek, you might prefer to go to the library to find the 1989 version that gives more preparation than its more recent cousin. By the way, Malek's test questions themselves: many of them are so outlandish that one is amazed that he thinks ETS will ask such trivia.

The Worst Test Prep for the GRE

I'm with many of the other reviewers: stick with the Princeton Review's test prep, and the Norton Anthologies. This book is trash. I'm infuriated that it's considered a valid study guide and continues to be published. Here's a sample practice test question:

Which three elements best define Post-Modernism?

a) Randomness, excess, discontinuity
b) Flashback, fragmentation, humor
c) Nature, faith, solidity
d) Immorality, sense of loss, meaninglessness
e) Montage, metaphor, absurdity

I was longing for an answer choice f) that might read "One adjective from each of the above. A pastiche of the pre-existing choices."

The Research and Education Association lists a) as the correct answer. If you buy this book, you'll be answering questions that would never be asked on the GRE in English Literature, and you'll be scouring the answer choices for the incorrect answer that the slip-shod REA would call correct.

Very comprehensive!

This is a great book! The review is substantial and there are 3 practice tests. While I understand that many previous reviewers are not happy with REA removing 3 practice tests from the first edition (which had a total of 6), they also replaced them with review chapters. The first edition was only a book of practice tests. I have sat for the actual test once already and I think the questions are exactly the types that are asked. The review chapters won't be enough to review, but no one book ever will be. You will have to pull out all of your Norton Anthologies and read for months. And I seriously recommend a course in literary theory to anyone who is still enrolled in school. There's no way around it. This test is getting harder. Just try one practice test before reviewing all that much and you will see what I'm talking about.

Absolutely required reading for middle through high school. REQUIRED!

How do you deal with difficult subjects of bullying, depression, and teen suicide? Jerjonji's characters are so real and so natural that she somehow manages to insert you into the story, and make you a participant in every thought and feeling that each character experiences. She avoids the sensationalism that would leave you saying, "That could never happen at my school," and brings the very real headlines that you see on your tv into your own bedroom, your own classroom, and your own life. A great story about the joys and struggles of family and school, with just the right balance to remain a delightful, feel-good read that makes you cry just enough at just the right times. I recommend this book for girls and boys from about 7th grade up, maybe a little younger, and for any English teacher who likes to engage in meaningful classroom discussion. And I'm naming my next son "Kenyon."

Captivating Read

I did not want to put the book down. I love how the the first person style of writing is in the present. It is as if the reader is walking along with Panda Girl, able to see and feel the events in her life, and those around her as they unfold. The personalities and emotions of each character are such that leaves the reader wanting to know more, wanting to get to the next chapter to find a new reveal about the characters. The story line takes Panda Girl through her life at school and finding her own way to deal with classmate relationships, as well as a big change that happens in her family's life.
I would recommend this book for a young adult book club, and as a book for other young adult groups to open up dialog about what young teens face and may have to deal with at school and in life. A portion of the sale is being donated to the Society for Prevention of Teen Suicide by both the publisher and the author.

READ TWICE -- SO FAR!

I think everyone from Middle School up will love this book. It belongs in every Middle School library in the country. I felt an immediate connection with Panda and her struggles as an outsider and just being that awkward age between 12 and fourteen. Although it is not as dark as A Catcher in the Rye, I can see Panda Girl sitting on a shelf right next to it. I have been recommending it to all my friends. Once I started reading Panda Girl, I couldn't put it down. Thanks, jerjoni! Great first novel!
