About the Author

About the Editors:

Dr-Ing Orestis Schinas is the Professor of Shipping and Ship Finance and Head of the Maritime Business School of the Hamburg School of Business Administration (HSBA) since 2008. He has served in senior and top-management positions and has a vast experience in the maritime and logistics industry and has offered his services to private and public entities as well as to international organizations. His professional career includes large corporate and business development projects as well as advanced research assignments in the maritime and port sectors. He holds a Dipl-Ing degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering (NTUA, 1994), a Masters in Shipping Management (WMU, 1998) and he was awarded the doctoral title in 2005 (NTUA) for his thesis on Ship Finance. His work is published in major business and academic journals.

Dr. Max Johns is Managing Director at VDR German Ship owners’ Association in Hamburg. He is teaching ship finance at the Maritime Business School of the Hamburg School of Business Administration (HSBA) since 2008. He holds BA and MA degrees from Universit� Paul Val�ry Montpellier III in France, an MBA from KU Leuven in Belgium and was awarded the doctoral title from the University of T�bingen in Germany. He publishes frequently on maritime issues.

Carsten Grau is German lawyer –Rechtsanwalt- and Solicitor (England & Wales). He has practiced maritime and corporate law in Bremen and Hamburg since 1998 and specializes in advising corporate entities and individuals in all areas of maritime business. At HSBA, he is module responsible for the maritime law contents in the MBA Shipping programme. He holds a law degree from the University of Hamburg and a German and Liberian Master Mariner License.

Eisenberg and Mussen's book is a refreshing look at what can go right with child development. The research and the ideas give professionals (teachers, mental health, social change advocates) and parents clear ideas about how to approach developing and encouraging prosocial, caring, sharing and empathic children. If many people, including politicians, seriously looked at the literature it would be much clearer about how to train and restructure institutions, schools, childcare centers and address world issues, and possibly what kind of refugee camps and IDP camps to fund and support. The uses of this kind of book could be profound or just shelved and forgotten.

Needlework Encyclopedia

I have several embroidery and needlework encyclopedia and dictionaries. Most of them are great, but I have found that each of them offers something just a bit different. This book tells the history of three different forms of needlework with color photo illustrations. There are three sections of diagrams and color photos showing a particular stitch, other names it goes by, when it might be appropriate to use, etc. There are even some spots that if you discover another stitch that you can post a picture and notes about the stitch. There is an extensive bibliography in the back of the book; there is a chart of DMC to Anchor thread colors and one that is the reverse: of Anchor to DMC thread colors. This would come in so handy if you have both types of embroidery floss but not enough of one brand to finish a project and want to be sure you are using the correct colors. There is also a stitch index in the book too. All in all a great reference source and a must buy for a dedicated embroiderer and also someone just starting out in embroidery it would be a great help in making and perfecting stitches.

Huge amount of information, well illustrated in color

Amazing! After being enchanted by Kaffe Fassett's "Glorious Needlepoint" book, I wanted to know more so I bought both this and "The Needlepoint Book: A Complete Update of the Classic Guide". Yikes! I've stepped off the edge and fallen into the abyss! Still falling after several weeks and haven't reached the bottom yet. I never dreamed there would be SO MANY DIFFERENT STITCHES! After meticulously illustrating many needlepoint stitches and how to do them, the author presents you with 3 beautiful projects that will get you up to speed. Needlepoint is not the only hand-work subject however. It covers a multitude of crafts perpetrated with needle, thread and yarn. It is quite the encyclopedia, as the cover states. I was quite taken with the ribbon embroidery. Well worth the price.

I've been needlepointing for a couple of years, and my mother has been doing all kinds of needlework for decades, and we both love this book. It's beautiful to look at, clearly organized and laid out, and full of useful and inspiring information. My favorite parts are the stitch guides, which are really well done -- each stitch is illustrated with a how-to line diagram as well as a color photo of the stitch itself, along with a written description of the pros and cons of the stitch, directions for stitching, suggested uses, etc. (You can see examples of these pages in the "Click to Look Inside" link on the Amazon page.) I looked at a lot of stitch guides (trying to find some new ideas to add to my continental/basketweave habit), and the ones in this book were really the best I've seen, by far. Besides the stitch guides, the sections about supplies and the history of the crafts are fun to read, too. I would highly recommend it to anyone who needlepoints, cross-stitches, or does any kind of embroidery (or wants to learn how!)

Not up to snuff

I just finished the course that was taught by Dr. Kanabar. This is the second course that I've taken with him in regards to project management. He used this as the text book for the course. I got an A/B+ in his courses, but not because of this book. The concept of the PMBOK is that a large group of professionals within the field get together and discuss project management and put forth documentation that is meant to help a project manager create a solid plan to tackle a project. This book spends a fair amount of each chapter complaining about how the authors didn't like the terms that the PMBOK team agreed upon and gave reasons why theirs is better.

It does touch upon the basics of each core concept but I can't agree with the other reviewer that it is worth anything for the experienced project manager. If you are looking for a solid book to get you started in Project Management, then this is not the book for you. If you have experience in true project management, this book will not help you. If you want a read that will entertain you by a bit by someone nitpicking over every term and phrase in the PMBOK, then you've hit pay dirt.

The logic of the chapters doesn't make sense even to the author. As a textbook, you skipped all over the book in the readings, the path from Chapters 1 to 2 to 3 obviously was not good for a beginner on a Masters Level. The chapter content felt the same way, very jumbled and not laid out in a structured way.

All in all, I think that the authors are very knowledgeable, but after finishing the book, I do not feel more confident that I could take on the PMP exam.

This book adds nothing to one's understanding of project management

"The Art and Science of Project Management, 2nd edition" is so full of grammatical and spelling errors that I could hardly believe my eyes. I found myself constantly distracted by thoughts of "how could this book be published like this?" Typeos in the text are one thing (of which there were plenty), but inaccurate mathematical formulas just created confusion. At least one in four mathematical examples in this book contain errors. Sections covering crucial formulas like NPV were terribly brief, confused and the formulas used were simply wrong.

The book was printed in black and white. As a result many of the line charts weren't readable... until the 12th chapter when the book started using dashed and dotted lines.

The book didn't even have a big picture map of the different project management processes. There wasn't any section that explained "OK, the deliverables from each process are x,y,z." I felt utterly confused and frustrated trying to use this book as my primary study guide for the course.

Studying project management, especially if you're trying to learn the PMI way of doing things, is challenging. This book offers absolutely no guidance. If you're like me this book will confuse and frustrate you.

Exhilarating book

Falling in Danger is an amazing book! I thought Kaylie Newell did an amazing job with her first book, but she has surpassed all expectations with this book. I could not put it down and read it in one day! You feel like you know the characters and can feel the emotions that they are feeling. The excitement never ends, and the heat keeps gettig better! Your heart goes out to the dogs that are in these fighting rings! I know that you will enjoy this book as much as I did! I can't wait to see what Kaylie Newell has in store for us next! :)

One you will hold close to your heart

I actually just finished this book. Normally I like to digest it, and then give my thoughts, but this book was AMAZING!! Kaylie Newell knocked it out of the park with Falling In Danger, and with 40% of the proceeds going to The Pixie Project (which Kaylie will talk about tomorrow when she comes by A Tasty Read to chat, so come back), you have no reason NOT to buy this book!!

My only warning to dog lovers, is that some of the scenes are sad and the discussion of true events are even sadder. I teared up a few times and you will too, especially when you meet "Bruta". LOVED HIM!! Speaking of LOVED.....Detective Ian Cole...um.....HELLO!! Mr. Detective is undercover when we first meet him, working to break the "Dog Fighting Ring" case, when he gets stuck babysitting, Jessica Brady, whom the idiot father and son team, have kidnapped to try and get money from her father. Jessica is everything that he doesn't need at that moment, when he is so close to blowing the case wide open, but her sweet voice and curvy body set off a protective streak in him that even he doesn't recognize.

I don't want to tell you too much about the story since it just came out today, and I sincerely want you all to read Kaylie's New Release, especially all my DOG lovers....we need to help support the rescues!! But I will say, I really, really liked this book, I liked our heroine, Jessica, who is funny and spunky, and I already drooled....I mean told you about Ian Cole....even his name is HOT!! And "Bruta"...who seriously makes this book SPECIAL.....we all need a Bruta in out lives!!

So my recommendation to you is to PURCHASE this book!

Tightly Written, Full of Suspense

I loved Ms. Newell's first book, A Death That Lingers. But Falling in Danger is even better. The story is fraught with suspense and sexual tension, and gives us a scary peek at the dark world of dog fighting and the evil men who perpetuate that activity. The author's writing style is clean and tight with plenty of action and descriptions that really brought the story to life for me. I literally could not put this book down. I am a huge fan of this new writer. She's going places, that's for sure.

What?

I find it very difficult to leave poor reviews on books. I give credit to any author who can start, finish, and publish a work, something I have not yet done myself. However, from the perspective of a reader and technical analyst, I just didn't get much out of this book. In fact, as my review title suggests, there were several times I found myself saying aloud, "What is she talking about?".

I read this for the CMT level three exam, and if it had not been required reading I would not have finished it. Actually, I really just skimmed through the last half. After she started going into astronomy and planets' retrograde movement in chapter nine, I was emotionally finished with this book. It is a perfect example for why technical analysis is still looked down upon by many in the finance industry as tantamount to voodoo. She takes an already esoteric discipline and makes it a lot more complicated than it needs to be. The goal of TA is simply to give a trader a way to identify higher probability entry and exit points, and there are much simpler ways to accomplish this than the tools found in this book.

Pros:
1. The author is obviously very intelligent, and I'm sure is a fantastic analyst and trader. If she understands and can apply everything she writes about, more power to her.
2. She tries to look at TA in unique ways and develop new rules and applications. The range rules for oscillators like the RSI early in the book were beneficial.

Cons:
1. I did not feel she explained how to apply the complex concepts well and assumed the reader had the same knowledge base as her. I'm no novice and was able to follow along with a lot of work on my part, but she is still introducing new rules, concepts, and methods that she has developed or identified so those need to be explained more thoroughly since they are not exactly a part of the traditional TA "dogma". I also thought the writing was poor at times and included too many non sequiturs that seemed out of place in a professional work. Like I said, there were many times I was left wondering what she was talking about or why she decided to mention something, and I don't mean this from a comprehension or understanding standpoint. The topics just seemed out of place.
2. Poor charts that were placed horribly in the book. The ones included were often cluttered with way too much going on for such a small chart. I understand there are space limitations but other books have made it work. There were also way too few current charts. It's great that a concept worked in the one chart the reader is shown from back in 1996, but I would have liked to see evidence that these concepts can still be applied in the current markets. She would also refer to the same chart for pages at a time so I had to keep flipping back and forth every sentence. If ever there was a book that would benefit from a Kindle edition with hyperlinks, it's this one.
3. Like most Elliot Wave practitioners, she spoke too often in definites, making the subjects seem like they work every single time and followed strict rules. TA is not mathematics. 2 + 2 is not always 4 every single time.
4. Way too often she introduced concepts, but didn't explain them until later in the book. This got very annoying.

If you must read this book for the CMT, I hope you get more out of it than I did. If you are just interested in expanding your technical analysis knowledge, be forewarned that at times the author may sound like she's about to read your horoscope to predict the grains markets.

heavy reading - not for beginners or intermediates

This book is part of the CMT required reading and the title claims it is for the "trading professional". I do not doubt that one bit. This is not a system on trading strategies or a broad review of technical analysis so much as a rethink on the traditionally accepted methods.

Being an intermediate level trader, I found this material a bit on the complex side. I prefer a simple method and system to technical analysis and this goes beyond the KISS method for sure. Some interesting ideas about trendlines, oscillators, fibonnaci, etc...and I would say they are definitely outside of the box or innovative approaches.

If you're a beginner, reading this will scare you away from technical analysis.
If you're intermediate, reading this will have you looking for a simpler approach.
If you're advanced, reading this might help you develop a greater edge...but its not a complete system.

What did I do with the book?
Returned it after reading and skimming...coming to the conclusions mentioned here.
I gave it 3 stars for the innovative approaches and thoroughness of analysis, but I wish the amazon ratings could be scaled based on skill level. In that case its a 1 star for beginners and a 2 star for intermediates simply on the ease of application.

Avoid at all Costs

Constance Brown's book may be the worst investment book I have ever read (and I have hundreds of finance books) for the following reasons:

1. Lack of useful information - This 300+ page book could easily be condensed to a five-page handout. Worse yet, most of the ideas presented are simply not tradable. Advising people to invest actual money based on a Gann Wheel, by reverse engineering an indicator to determine a price move, or from Fibonacci time and price objectives is completely irresponsible. Finally, several of her 'new' concepts are not new at all: ignoring spikes when using trend lines, cautioning against the drop-off effect when using moving averages, and optimizing the period used for oscillators.

2. Difficult to extract information - The rare tidbits of information that exist are needlessly difficult to identify. For example, the premise of the first chapter is that the current oscillator range can be used to determine the trend of the market. However, this conclusion is never stated explicitly in one area.

3. Strange information - In order to determine if you are "wave deaf" (unable to become one with Elliot Waves), Connie advises readers to perform the following test: "Find an object like a fireplace tool that is used to poke logs or shovel ashes...If you can pick this object up at the fulcrum point, you have the sense of proportion and balance required to properly trade using Elliot." Can you believe this isn't taught at business school yet?

4. Huge ego - The comments other reviewers have mentioned about her self-proclaimed trading prowess are littered throughout the text. For example, prior to presenting her forecast based on Elliot Wave, she writes, "I have a chance of being dead wrong in a book that is expected to have Global distribution." There are no fewer than 100 such comments throughout the book.

One reviewer wrote "... although Constance obviously has tremendous trading ability, she is unable to successfully convey her ideas in the book." Really? Although I agree that she has written a terrible book, I don't see any evidence that she may be successful.
