Thomas Dunne, ex-chief superintendent of the Dublin Metropolitan police looks back on his career built during the latter years of Queen Victoria's empire, from his home in Baltinglass in Dublin in 1932. Like King Lear, Dunne tries valiantly to break free of history and himself. The Steward of Christendom took London by storm when it premiered at the Royal Court Theatre Upstairs in March 1995 with Donal McCann in the title role. It transferred to Broadway and has toured around the world.

I love most Irish playwrights and novelists, but this play was a dreary, over-written clunker of a memory play.

Did not care for the writing at all -- monologue heavy, all of the burden on the central character, dreary setting, a memory play with no real action. Almost unplayable for the central character. And onstage, in 2013, at the Mark Taper in Los Angeles, Brian Dennehey seemed to have regretted signing on for the project. He gave a couple of newspaper interviews that indicated he had no idea why he had agreed to do this. The script is a dreary read. That production was a dreary slog.

Review of Barry's STEWARD

I meant to order the paperback edition, not the Acting edition, but I guess I was in a hurry. I would have enjoyed a preface, etc.,
but I have the basic play, which is beautifully written. Within the first few pages, I was drawn into the main character's thinking,
almost felt I knew hi. I am a great fan of this author, so I am happy with my order. I haven't finished reading it yet, or I'd say more.

James S. Kunen was a Columbia College sophomore when he wrote The Strawberry Statement. He has had a varied career in both journalism and law. Kunen has written several books and numerous essays for The New Yorker, People, Newsday, The New York Times Magazine, and many other publications.

Relive! if you can

A true blast from the past, for a generation that has grown up and, yes, even old. Many of us I'm sure still cling to some of the values of back then, but I doubt that most of us would still be willing to "Fight in earnest and altogether." Still good reading after all these years.

Oh, the times, they were a-changing

In the early 1970s, as I struggled through my adolescence, James Simon Kunen's "The Strawberry Statement" was one of my favorite books. Part diary, part reflection and part polemic, it allowed me to participate vicariously in the confusion, rage and activism of Columbia's student strikes of the late 1960s.

Kunen was the kind of kid I wanted to be. A nerdy kind of a guy, he participated in anti-establishment student actions at Columbia University. He protested construction projects that supposedly disenfranchised Columbia's neighbors and helped occupy the offices of college officials. He was an activist, though on the fringes, "stickin' it to the man" before the phrase became widely known. Kunen was the poster child for my teen rage against a governmental machine that had my parents' blind support. His writing is genuine and funny, capturing the hydra-headed angst of being a long-haired college kid in 1968. No wonder I liked the book!

Kunen's description of student organizers like Mark Rudd nailed (albeit unconsciously) the leaders of the period as typical politicians, who carefully managed the mob's righteous indignation with their own positioning for future leadership roles. Kunen's description of university officials poignantly captured their vapidity and their befuddlement at being questioned by their under-age charges. The book is a perfectly-posed snapshot of a culture teetering between a passive age of obedient complacency and an emerging age of anti-authoritarian mistrust and challenge.

Thirty years later, I also see some of the narcissistic silliness that defined the 1960s. The war in Vietnam, which presumably fueled protests, is strangely absent from Kunen's writings, giving his musings a tinge of empty-headedness rather than profundity. Marxism, which appealed to a generation of college radicals, seems worn more as a badge of distinctiveness from his parent's unreflective capitalism rather than a lived reality. For all his desire to be different, Kunen is depressingly the same as many post-adolescents, crossing swords with adults who don't take him seriously, missing the big picture while fighting the good fight.

As a way for adolescents to get in touch with their desire for activism, "The Strawberry Statement" is a gem. As a snapshot of being 19 years old in late 1960s - with its half-blind groping toward an unseen and hopefully brighter future-it is priceless.

Important memoir from Columbia radical about '68 riot

I first read this book back in the late '70's, when I was in college myself. I strongly sympathized with a lot of the things the author was saying, which seemed just as true then in terms of broad philosophical concerns.
The book is really kind of picaresque, though, and is mostly about the author's days wandering around the Columbia campus during the 'student unrest' of spring 1968. It seems to me now to be an accurate picture of the state of mind (and ego!) an adolescent caught up in the excitement of a hopeful ferment. 20 years later the radicalism looks pretty absurd, and the naivite of a handful of ivory-tower revolutionaries believing that they would somehow remake the country in the face of popular disapproval (Oh yes!) and a complete lack of long range plans and goals, is laughable. Still, there is a lot of crie du couer here, mixed together with teenage truculence.
Kunen was 19 when he wrote the book which would make him 50 now. He was recently a reporter for TIME magazine, and wrote a '97 article that can be looked up at the TIME website about the children of the radicals. He also wrote a follow-up to The Strawberry Statement which I THINK was a TIME article, in '88 I think.
If you find the subject interesting I would strongly recommend RADS by Tom Bates about '60's radicalism in action at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
'One of these days I may fight in earnest and altogether so that I won't have to fight any more.'
Maybe. But probably not.

Fell short... way short

I was excited when this book first appeared on Amazon as a 450 page book on MVVM. I was thinking someone finally has put some meat around the subject. Then the week the book was supposed to be released it changed to a 272 page book. Bummer.

I was lucky enough to check out a friends eBook copy of this before I bought it.

The first chapter of this book really threw me for a loop. It is a high level overview of random features available in WPF and Silverlight. I would hope anyone wanting to learn MVVM would already have been introduced to Silverlight and WPF. A waste of 20 pages, bringing the book down to a 252 page book.

We then get a scattered overview of data binding features. It hits on a lot of topics, but with very little explanation. If I didn't already know the topics, I would have been lost.

Scattered thoughts remain the theme throughout the rest of the book. Chapter 3 (titled Model-View Seperation) goes from Separation of Concerns, to MVVM alternatives, to tips on feature implementation, to test driven development, a mention of commands, to data binding, to a mention of the Mediator pattern, to coupling and cohesion, to the MVP and MVC. My head was spinning by the time I got through it.

The next chapter introduces the ViewModel with a template wizard that at the time of this review was not available for download. Then there is a chapter on events and commands (which isn't bad), validation, unit testing, application support, and then a chapter that presents a complete solution.

I would recommend sticking with content available elsewhere.

Too narrow

I was also disappointed in this book. The problem with this book and with most resources on MVVM is that they are too narrow. Anyone that understands presentations patterns long history knows that these patterns are notoriously flexible and that the many different ways of applying the pattern all have trade offs. Instead of presenting the full gammet of options when implementing MVVM, Gary instead decided to only focus on MVVM with code behind. Sure, there is nothing wrong with having code in your code behind but at the same time there are many benifits to going for pure MVVM with no code in the code behind. The project that I'm currently working on is heavily contracted and we have lots of developers come in and out of varying levels of skill. If you provide a reference from the view to the view model it will get abused and you will have weaker\lazier developers reverting to automonous view, supervising controller, passive view, etc... if your lucky and there own hybrids like the infamous MVPVM from my current project if your not. Gary just assumes that there is no benifit in the pure approach and fails to cover event behavior pattern, event triggers or any of the many frameworks out there that provide command to event mapping. This means that the first time you want to bind to a non-command event that you have to add a reference from view to view model. Very disappointing

Being an experienced software architect and developer of business application I thought this book would be a great addition to my learning. I purchased the book before it was published so I could get a jump start. This book has some good information, but is not much use as a learning tool. There is so much detail missing that it was more difficult to follow the concepts using the book. Sorry Gary, but this one feels like you rushed it. What happened to the sample application? You left out the most of what would be required to work through it. I am still waiting for a good full fledged book on MVVM.

Excellent - good mix of mathematics and real experience.

Excellent description of the mathematical models used to reconstruct and understand (primarily)car accidents. Includes worked out examples and a careful and common sense derivation of the equations used. The only slight drawback is that the author did not use (or have access to) typesetting that allows for showing math equations in the traditional format, ie the square root of 2 times gravity-constat times distance time coeff of friction is would be written as s=(2*g*f*d)1/2 power. It's very easy to get past this and the prose/descriptions/examples are very good.
