Pocket Sky Atlas

This atlas is thoughtfully laid out for use at the telescope in the field. The paper is a heavy dull-white stock that does not show reflection under a red light. Because the book is spiral bound, the pages lay flat freeing up your hands. No more trying to find a heavy object to keep the pages from turning.

Inside the front cover you will find printed a sample double page chart layout with a legend. Also printed is an angular distance scale and a Telrad bull's eye. I made a clear transparency copy of this page using an 8 �" x 11"sheet of overhead projector film by running it through a copy machine. I cut out the angular scale and then I cut the Telrad bull's eye in a long rectangle about 1" x 3" leaving the bull's eye at one end and using the other end as a handle to move the finder around the map. I put these in a small envelope and tucked it inside the atlas.

The contents page lists the best months to view the objects by R.A. range during evening, midnight and mourning and on which chart to find them. Towards the end of the atlas, there are four close-up charts of some of the most observed regions of the sky. The index is broken down by star name, galaxies, open and globular clusters, bright, dark and planetary nebulae. The Caldwell and Messier catalogs are listed separately. The back cover has the chart key for both north and south hemispheres. There are 80 main charts containing 30,796 stars to magnitude 7.6.

The introduction explains in easy to understand detail how the charts are labeled and arranged. The same chart legend appears on the first page of each chart as well as the R.A. range and best time and month for viewing. All the charts are printed in color on a white background for easy reading under a red light. A location guide to constellations and what the Greek star letters mean is also included.

Each page has the same basic layout as any good star atlas. The lines for the R.A and Declination are clearly marked. You will notice that a small blue triangle with a number inside is located on three sides of each page. These triangles point to the adjoining charts that make up more of that part of the sky. The number in the triangle indicate which chart.

There are two printing errors in the atlas on page 55 and on the close-up Chart C. You can download the printable corrected color pages from the Sky and Telescope website.

You can the cut and paste the corrected pages directly over the page in the book. I used spray adhesive.

Bottom line, this is a very compact and easy to use atlas you'll ever come across. It is very user friendly and a must have to "grab and go" with your favorite telescope or binoculars.

Very Usable and Practical Atlas

Roger Sinnott's Pocket Sky Atlas fills a big void and vital niche- one that emphasises portability, usability and practicality. Everything in this little volume is extremely well thought out- from the quality of the book, the practical spiral bound layout, the scale of the star maps, clear and readable printing, intelligent and helpful labelling of stars and deep sky objects (you will appreciate the use of popular names for some DSO's), to a pure user friendly feel. There is even a helpful Telrad target scale and angular distance for quick estimations. Eminently suitable for the field, this is also a great planning atlas for astrophotographers and visual observers alike. For visual observation, this atlas shines when partenered with a Telrad finder (I really hate the flimisier Riger finder!).

The only place I think this atlas comes up short is if you are doing serious star hopping under the telescope. This is understandable given the scale of the atlas. I recommend Uranometria or similar atlases if you are a serious star-hopper.

Sept 2008 Update: I now have 3 copies of this Atlas! One I leave in my car and read it at restaurants during lunch break. The other is in my observing bag and yet one is one my desk at home. I love this atlas. This is perfect for astrophotography and weeknight quick sessions with my TV-85.

This little book stands out well to repeated field use. Mine is looking great after a year of extensive (and rough) use- no pages fallen off, no fade, no issues.

An outstanding value

The authors of this guide did almost everything right.

It's just the right size; at 9 X 6, it's large enough to be legible and small enough to be easy to handle. It's spiral bound, so it lies flat for easy viewing. The paper is heavy with a semi-glossy finish, so it should resist dew fairly well and won't produce reflections from a flashlight.

Most importantly, the charts are extremely well designed and clear. They are arranged in an order that makes a lot of sense, and it's easy to locate the charts of sections of the sky that are adjacent to the one you're looking at. There is a lot of detail, but not so much that the charts are just masses of dots. The color coding and labeling is very clear and completely consistent throughout the book. Finally, the three index sections-- one general index, one index to Caldwell Catalog objects, and one index to Messier Catalog objects-- are extremely easy to use.

The one thing I worry about a little is heavy dew situations. The paper seems very durable, but it's not coated. I bought a piece of clear Lucite the size of the opened book to shield it from the heavier moisture.

If I had to choose just one sky guide for regular use, this would be the one. I'm very happy I bought it, and I'd do it again.

Good information

I got this book hoping to learn more information on the Pineal Gland. My dad, both of my grandparents, and previous generations before that, were born with multiple gifts. My Little brother and I can usually feel and see much of the same things at times. Unfortunately I never harnessed or evolved my abilities because at a young tender age I was constantly being attacked by not so great entities. It was all bad. So for such a long time, I've just shut it all off. A good chunk of these abilities stuck with me though. At times a few known dead appear in my dreams, at times I see more of other things like warnings about danger, or if say I need to adjust something about myself. When I'm depressed or feel emotionally drained, I would say that it's difficult for me to see things clearly. Reading people's emotions especially the ones that are a bit more negative is something I recently acquired. The hardest thing for me ever since I started to harness more and more these abilities at the present moment is that one can now see the reality for what it really is, and in the process has allowed me to see many things I never wanted to accept or the fact I had to say good bye to people that were no longer doing me any good in my life especially with friends.

I've also developed a healthier spiritual part of me. I have a much better appreciation of so many people as well as for those that have passed on. I still need a lot to work on but so far it seems amazing. I don't regret ignoring this when I was a kid as I just wasn't ready for it. But I feel a bit more ready now. It's helped me understand people a lot more but also given me a whole new perception to my existence. It's true. Mia Rose is correct. You need to have patience. It's almost like waiting to catch a fish. When I get a good vision, I have to make myself aware of it so that I can explore more the dream. And when I wake up, I do the research. Some are more blunt and obvious. Others need a bit more work and deciphering. I recommend this book for those curious, the novices, or as a reference. As far as the tingling sensations, I've learned to pay attention to those as it may mean there's a spirit present ready to communicate or a sense I need to prepared to know what ability to use and get ready for what's coming. No matter how much my ability grows, I want to remain humble about it and not ever take advantage of people� .

Great book for research on The Third Eye

I watch a lot of videos on the the topic of manifesting, law of attraction and a few times the term Third Eye was mentioned. I am totally green on subject and decided to do research and got this book. This book is well written. The subject is a bit complicated for me so I will have to read this book a few times before I can really absorb the content. This is a good book to start your research on the Third Eye.

Survival Dystopian

I really enjoyed this take on a dystopian world. Throughout the story we follow Brie, a survivor with a goal to get to her hometown. She runs into a small group with a young child and another female solo traveler around the same time. I really liked how this book focused on the general survival aspect of a post-deadly outbreak situation with no one, not even the reader, knowing who to trust.

I definitely felt like all the decisions Brie made throughout this novel were believable and logical, and it was very interesting to watch the information unfold around her. I also like that the author left it up to us to determine the motives and morals of the different groups, and not making it so black-and-white "these are the good guys/bad guys". Hope to see more from this author soon!

If you're like me, you have observed the dystopian/post-apocalyptic YA trend and thought "Yes, great, but where's the lesbian version of this?" Don't worry. It exists. All the Devils Here takes place after the worst has already happened. The majority of the population has been wiped out in a massive pandemic, everyone else is on the run, avoiding both the infected and the mysterious governmental (?) units roaming in vans--promising safety but delivering gunshots and kidnappings.

I thought it was interesting that the book starts here, with Brie already having been on the run for a while, and having adapted to this new reality. I would have expected to start at beginning of the outbreak, following her as she escapes New York, but instead we get this backstory summarized later. It shifts the focus from how this happened to the process of surviving. And that is what the narrative revolves around: not any specific goal or path, just the relentless determination to survive at almost any cost. Despite the genre, I didn't actually find this a fast-paced book. It is short, but although Brie is a survivor and active in her perseverance, the plot revolves around things that happen to her and then her attempts to deal with it. Through no fault of her own, she is a passive agent with very little control over her life in this cutthroat landscape.

The arc of the story is not so much the plot as it is Brie's understanding of how she has changed as a person in order to survive, and her relationship with Raven, who begins as an extremely reluctant ally and becomes a vital person in her life. There is a bit of an element of insta-love in this, but it's more understandable in the context of a dystopian future where any human contact is unusual. I do wish that we got more from Raven as her own person as opposed to Brie's perception of her, however. She permeates the novel in Brie's fixation on her, but we don't actually get to learn a lot about her. In fact, my biggest problem with this book is how Raven is described. She is referred to constantly by her (dark) skin color, which is once compared to mud. She is repeatedly described as a "wild thing" (when she's not the "prettiest thing"). Brie makes a lot of assumptions about her based on her appearance, which considering that she knows pretty much nothing about her other than her skin color, seem pretty racist: she assumes that Raven is a "lost girl" with no relationship with her family, who left home too young. She contemplates whether Raven was a sex worker in her former life. There is absolutely no context as to why Brie is making these assumptions about her other than her appearance and the fact that she is alive and alone (which, of course, Brie--a pampered boarding school student--also is).

I found the governmental agency to be the most interesting element of the story. We know that they are taking people in vans against their will, and there are rumors of camps that are being set up, but we don't know the motives of this organization. I couldn't help but think that these people very well could have a cure and be trying to help survivors, but there would be no way to know this as a person hiding in the woods. Because of the lack of any source of media, these people in hazmat suits are a complete wild card. [vague spoilers] Even as we learn more about this group of people, they remain morally grey, which I thought was interesting. In some ways they are the villains of the piece, but they are also the only reason humanity has any hope of a "civilized" future. [end spoilers]

I found All the Devils Here to be an interesting concept, but it wasn't the fast-paced thrill ride I expect from this genre. I did like the examination of what it takes to be a survivor in situations like this, and how it affects a person's perception of themselves, and I'm happy to have a queer addition to this genre, but I was looking for a little bit more from this in terms of plot. And I found Raven's depiction disappointing. This was a mixed bag for me, but if you're interesting in a survival story with a bit of lesbian romance thrown it, All the Devils Here is worth the read!

Sweet story, but I could guess what was going to happen though and the relationship felt very forced, i felt we didn't know Raven at all. I finished it because I'll always read a zombie novel with female leads If you're looking for a quick easy read it's not bad.

About the Author
Dave Kocak has been teaching tennis for 30 years. He has taught in resorts, public courts, private clubs, beginner kids, beginner adults, nationally and internationally ranked juniors and coached at the Division I college level. Tennis is fundamentally a simple game-- not easy but simple. It took a simple guy like Dave to figure out how to best teach it to those who don't consider themselves talented or athletic but do want to have fun, get some exercise and see real improvement in their tennis game. He is fond of saying that "I have never failed to teach anyone how to play a decent game of tennis, although a few students quit before I was finished." Since no books existed that covered all aspects of the sport, and certainly none that included his teaching methods, he decided to write one. It's been so well received he is writing the follow-up: Tennis for the Rest of Us Part Two -- OK, So now I'm Hooked. How do I get Good? He currently lives and teaches in Buffalo, New York and is available to be flown to private lessons in London, Paris, Rome and Monte Carlo.

Play tennis? Buy this book.

This is a very funny and entertaining book. Easy to read and fast paced - the author's definitions of common tennis terms (Easy Match: a match I won 6-2, 6-2; Close Match: a match I lost 6-2,6-2) may cause you to laugh on the court during a match (easy, close, or otherwise). Most people buying a tennis book, though, are not looking for jokes, they, like me, probably want to improve their game. If you, like me, are looking for a helpful guide to PLAYING tennis, this book will not disappoint. Dave Kocak is an experienced and highly knowledgeable pro, and he passes on that experience and knowledge in language that is refreshingly clean and useful. He never talks down to you and he never sounds boastful. The book is nicely illustrated and rich with examples. I found the chapters on strategy very helpful as well as the tips for hitting volleys, serves, and lobs. The book is great to have around for those winter days you wish you could get out on a court but just can't. In all, fourteen bucks well spent whether you want to learn to how to play or how to play better.
The jokes are good too.

I learned a lot about tennis and laughed while doing it. It is a quick-read with great information on how to play tennis and how to improve your game. Readers will appreciate the clear instructions, helpful pictures, and humor.

I'm a new tennis player and found that the book covered all the necessities. In addition to the basics there are great strategy techniques. It includes everything from fashion to USTA leagues. I read the book and now find myself returning to certain chapters when I'm trying to develop a particular aspect.

My husband has played tennis for 25 years and hopes that we can play mixed doubles. The book includes a hilarious section on mixed doubles that really hit home. I found myself laughing and sharing parts with my husband, who found it entertaining as well.

As I get better, I expect to keep going back to the book to find new ways to improve my game.
