AVOID

I was shocked to find largely positive reviews of this product. Since by criticizing it, I am contradicting other reviewers fairly directly, let me just explain my level of qualification: my bachelor's degree is in piano performance, and my master's degree is in piano pedagogy and performance. I am a private piano instructor and college music professor.

I can say without hesitation that there is no worse edition of the Mozart sonatas currently in print. This is true for several reasons:

1. The fingerings added here do more harm than good; my piano professor used to joke that Schirmer's editors were secretly hand surgeons trying to drum up their business by injuring pianists through repetitive motion in cramped positions. When one of my students brings in a Schirmer edition, I usually black out more of the fingerings than I keep.

2. The dynamic markings and articulations added to this edition reflect nineteenth century performance practice, and ignore more than a century of scholarship.

3. I find textual interference to be a bad idea in general, and recommend purchasing an Urtext edition instead. Henle or Wiener Urtext is hard to surpass; additionally, Kalmus/WB publishes a quite inexpensive edition. If, however, you dislike Urtext editions and want more guidance as to how to play the pieces, this is still not the edition for you. Buy the Alfred's edition instead, which at least gives decent advice (why pay for BAD advice from Schirmer?) and distinguishes between what the composer wrote and what the editor added.

4. Wrong notes. Lots of them, all through the sonatas.

5. The numbering system used for this edition is a version of the Koechel Verzeichnis seventy years obsolete.

6. VERY poor print quality. This edition is not even a new engraving; in addition to the overall lightness of print, there are frequent flyspots which contribute to the general illegibility.

The only redeeming quality of this Schirmer edition - and most Schirmer editions, in fact - is its cheapness.

look for a different edition!

This edition is not a good edition. I recently just started taking lessons from a very accomplished concert pianist from Germany and he told me never to buy this edition again. It's way over-edited. I am playing the 15th sonata in a minor and some passages are written differently, the dynamics are wrong in about half of the piece, some sections are written in different octaves and it led me to start questioning what i can believe or trust. If you aren't a very experienced player this is definitely not for you. I wouldn't even reccomend this edition to a proffesional. The one good thing about it was the fingering. The fingering suggestions were excellent but you should be able to figure that out yourself anyways. If you need to find a different edition always go with the urtext henle. of course i learned this the hard way.

Not my favorite...

For the price I can't really complain, but it is definitely not my favorite Mozart piano book for several reasons. I guess you could use it for writing in (putting your own fingerings down etc and not feel guilty about marking this one up )

Conservative Christian view

A good book but as a conservative Christian, I question whether the focus is on God or more on feelings and I listen to very contemporary Christian music.

A balanced look at music out of balance

As I write, I'm the third reviewer with two negative reviews preceding me. I very much disagree with those reviews about this book, and believe it to be a balanced view of a difficult issue. I do agree with one previous reviewer that this book is too late. The "war" for conservative music is over, and conservatives have lost. No surprise here. The world will continue to encroach upon the true church until the rapture. One reviewer admitted that rock music churches are not conservative with his statement, "Even many conservative churches have already made the move to worship led by guitar." If Christian rock made its way into the church through liberals, what does that make the "conservative" churches once they accept it?

The book does some good background study into the history of rock music, explaining the roots of its label coming from sexual immorality. The fact that rock is now well accepted in most styles of music does not negate that fact, it simply illustrates John Makujina's point ("Measuring the Music") that as a culture, we have been desensitized to the sound of rock. You have to admit, it's everywhere. The question this book addresses is, "Is it appropriate for the Church?" and the answer is "No."

The authors are not against modern music in church. They do not call us to return to the "old hymns" and nothing else. Good music is being written and published today, in many cases with theologically better lyrics than the slanted and traditionalized hymns of old. What the authors examine is the music that accompanies those lyrics. The music conveys a message on its own.

It is an easy read, filled with examples of the points being made, and does not have an "in your face" attitude. If you love rock music and get angry at anyone who would challenge your love, then don't read the book. If you are willing to be challenged to think about worldliness, associations, and the design of music (we're not talking lyrics here), then this would be a good read.

One reviewer thinks the book leads to a dead end with no suggestions on where to go to worship correctly. That is only the case if you think there is no music other than rock music. Sadly, for many today that is a practical truism for their lives.

Many have actually studied music and its effects in the past. One such person is Mickey Hart of the Greatful Dead. I've read his "Drumming at the edge of magic." A fascinating semi-autobiographical sketch of his pursuit of rhythm. Without rhythm all music is dead, but all things in balance. It's interesting to get a drummer's view of the influence of rhythm, and he's not really interested in morality or balance. John Makujina presents some good studies along this line in his book. Most Christians today simply are not willing to study this topic. Most are willingly ignorant and prefer to live by what they like. "Can we rock the gospel?" challenges that complacency.

May we begin to eat some meat. "Hebrews 5:14 But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil."

Is this the most important topic in life? No, but "Can we rock the gospel?" will help you in your discernment, if you're willing to listen.

Challenging to both contemporaries and traditionalists

When I decided to read "Can We Rock the Gospel?" I thought it would simply be a rehashing of other books on the subject of modern worship. I quickly learned that I was wrong. John Blanchard and Dan Lucarini (a former CCM musician himself) have done a wonderful job not only of discussing Christian rock but also of searching the Scriptures to see what the Bible teaches about music in general.

In chapters 1-7 of their book, Blanchard and Lucarini discuss the way the modern church has been divided over music as well as the history of rock music and some of rock's problems. Then, because Christian rockers borrow so heavily from secular rock, several chapters discuss how the occult, sex, drug use, rebellion, mental manipulation, and other undesirables influence secular rock groups and their structuring of their music (not lyrics alone). The extensive amount of reserach done here is impressive: it is obvious the authors are not simply vocalizing about a pet peeve.

Chapters 8-11 cover music in the Bible, show point-by-point why the various defenses of CCM are invalid, and set forth the principles that Christian music should adhere to. This book is valuable to those contemporaries who have questions about either CCM or why traditionalists believe the way they do. It gives a good look at what the objections of many traditionalists are, which is valuable knowledge to help contemporaries avoid the common misunderstandings of traditionalists. And traditionalists should also read it, not merely to be capable of defending their beliefs, but so they can be certain that their own use of music meets the standards of Scripture.

I bought this book looking for some new ideas to use in my pre-k class.
What a wonderful resource! With it's nice crisp layout, clearly defined chapters and new idea on each page it makes for easy reading.
The ideas are fun and practical with easy to create visuals and tools.

I haven't used a transition book by anyone else to compare, bu thtis book is incredibly detailed. It has discipline, morning, circle, attention getting, games, rhymes, chants, stories...and then What, Why, When, How and preperation information for each activity. And their are hundreds of them! I use it for my own 3 kids and the 3 extra I watch for daycare.

It is the best cooking book I've bought. The picture of the salad on the book cover took my heart and I decided to buy it even if the salad was the only good dish in the book.But I am lucky for ownning this book.I made some of the dishes in the book and all of them were delicious .The book is the result of the writer's experience as mother and a chef.The essential engrediants of the recipes were explained to make it easy for those who like lebanese food and haven't tried cooking it before.

Beautiful book. Lovely pictures through out the book. US customers need to know that this book is printed in the UK, therefore the measuring system is different but not too difficulty to figure out the conversion. Some recipes may contain long list of ingredients, but most of those ingredients you can find in most grocery stores across the US and middle eastern stores. Can't wait to make my first batch of the ma'maoul cookies with pistachios and date. Yum.
