Solid, not excellent

A few words about the book itself:

There are 11 selections, somewhat graded in difficulty. The apparatus has been kept to a minimum, hence the reader must keep his Wehr at hand. The notes are helpful, but not copious; however, the contours of the stories are outlined before the text of the story is presented, assisting the less experienced reader. I recommend reading the summaries after the story, not before, since they give away crucial plot points.

I would grade this book 3 stars, since the glossaries are too rudimentary, but I decided to rate it at 4 stars, because it does not deserve such low rating based purely upon the Kindle version (of course, I am sympathetic with the complaints and glad I bought a paper copy instead).

the arabic text is handled as a picture; as such its size is not adjustable and is quite small. the real problem is that the text of the stories is so light as to be mostly illegible. this is cleverly hidden in the downloadable sample by the fact that only the introduction is included. in its current format, a ten dollar scam.

Albert Boonstra is an associate professor at the Faculty of Management and Organisation, University of Groningen, The Netherlands. His research focuses on the human and organisational issues of implementing and using information and communication technologies. He teaches IT-management-related courses, and consults in the management of information systems for profit and not-for-profit organisations.

Graham Kennedy works in the internal consultancy division of the Royal Bank of Scotland. He has over eighteen years experience as a manager of change initiatives in industries as varied as financial services and engineering. This has provided him with many insights into the opportunities – and problems – which new technologies present to users.

A Very Good Textbook

I use "Managing Information Systems: Strategy and Organisation, 3rd Edition" in my "Management of Information Technology" course as the required textbook. The book is an excellent example from the British school of textbooks: condensed, yet relevant and very well-written. Each chapter begins with a mini case with a set of questions at the end. Throughout the chapter, as the subject develops, case questions--sometimes along with new information about the case--reemerge to give the reader a chance to apply the subject matter to the opening case. This feature is invaluable form a pedagogical point of view because it relates the case directly to the subject matter at hand. I look forward to the 4th edition of the title since the material covered and reading lists are slightly outdated. More comprehensive coverage of Web 2.0 and social media and their impact on organizations and information systems is required.

Arana instituted the "Writing Life" column at the Washington Post Book World in 1993 shortly after assuming the editorial reins, and she collates here articles from several top names she's enlisted as contributors over the past decade. Her lavish introductions sometimes run nearly as long as the essays; after the buildup she provides Stanley Elkin, though, his vacuous rambling is a severe disappointment. There are other notable clunkers: James Michener recalls banal advice he has given aspiring writers, while Joanna Trollope's essay, though excellently written, says little more than that creative writing courses might be able to teach writing, but they can't teach creativity. But the best contributions make slogging through the worst worthwhile. Some of the better stories are already well known: Ray Bradbury's account of how he came to write the screenplay for Moby-Dick, for example, or Donald E. Westlake's story of the creation of the pseudonym Richard Stark for his hard-boiled novels. But there are new treasures to discover as well. Jane Smiley discusses why she disavows her most famous novel, A Thousand Acres: "I am no longer attracted to the dire mechanism of tragedy," while Julian Barnes turns in a droll account of his experience as literary executor for close friend Dodie Smith. Though some of the authors do pass on practical wisdom to would-be writers, this collection is ideally suited for those who want to enjoy the "literary life" vicariously.

Some of the voices are flat, betraying the authors' discomfort with speaking publicly on matters of private inspiration. With others, there's a different problem: they've done this kind of thing so often they have little new to say. But many are brilliant. Julia Alvarez tells how she found her Latino voice when she read Maxine Hong Kingston's The Woman Warrior (1976). Anita Desai writes movingly about being "bicultural, adrift, and wandering." More Than Meets the Eye

I love reading other authors' takes on "the writing life" and how they cope with or find inspiration from daily life to continue nurturing their creativity, motivation, and changing goals. This book surprised me with an extremely varied mix of writing advice and insight.

From dealing with publishers and the importance of self-marketing to dealing with the slack you get for your chosen genre not being as academically accepted or how to maintain a personal life along with your career...the authors in this collection cover it all. There's enough here to touch on any aspect of writing you may be dealing with or thinking about and will, no doubt, include many surprises you haven't realized you do need more information about.

Reading the collection introduced me to new authors, some with writing styles I fell in love with and intend to read more from, and made me think about so many aspects of the art of writing that I've since realized keys for improving my own novel and new directions I want to go in in my own career.

This is the perfect gift for any writer you know...even if you have no idea what their own writing style or interests are. You'll make a better writer of them.

I like reading about the habits and workings of other writers. I think in many cases it gives a context to the ones who produce books that we love. Also it helps those who are writing to have heart about their own habits.

Celebrating the beauty and fragility of life

Most of us associate cherry blossoms with Japan, but are unaware that the nation's most important holiday celebrates blooming cherry trees. Starting in March on the southernmost tip of the Japanese archipelago, the Sakura Zensen (Cherry Blossom Front) sweeps northward. During this time, Japanese families gather for "Ohanami" - a tradition-heavy holiday that's very similar to Christmas in the U.S. For six weeks, there are outdoor parties to enjoy a flower that is both beautiful and short-lived.

The author was a beginning cyclist when he decided to ride his bike 2,000 miles along the length of Japan to follow the cherry blossom front as it moved north. He stayed in hostels and private homes and talked to as many Japanese as he could. Since this is a time when Japanese are outdoors, relaxed, and not working it's the optimal time to socialize and get to know people. Having just completed his dissertation on generational friction in Japanese culture, Sheppard regarded this trip as his "field work."

April in Japan is a month of transition, when students leave school and start jobs. It is a time when Japanese review the past and reassess their lives. In recent years, there has been friction within families and within society due to the "generation gap." Older people are still enthusiastic about the post-WWII economic miracle, but younger people see the personal costs of that prosperity. In the U.S. twenty-somethings are concerned that they may not be able to do as well as their parents financially. Their Japanese counterparts are increasingly turning their backs on the financial rat-race, seeking job satisfaction and personal freedom.

This author is a writer who has lived in Japan all of his adult life. He's active in promoting cycling in Japan and works with communities that are still struggling to recover from the 2011 tsumani. His extensive knowledge about Japanese culture and his obvious love for Japan make this an outstanding book.

Come on in, the water's fine

As a travel destination, Japan conjours up many different images. But that of a great cycling country is not usually one of them. Through this book and his more recent endeavours with Japan Coast to Coast, Lowell Sheppard is getting the word out that in fact Japan is among the best cycling destinations in the world. Especially if you like mountains! And hot baths, and ancient castles, and wonderful seafood...and some of the best hospitality you'll enjoy anywhere. I've been in this country for almost 23 years but I'm still, for better or worse, made to feel like a welcome guest.

Chasing the Cherry Blossom captures many of the little moments, the chance encounters, the small acts of generosity that make traveling in Japan - particularly traveling off the beaten track - so magical. This book takes you on a journey across the length and breadth of Japan, and you won't even have to break a sweat.

What a journey!

Chasing The Cherry Blossom is a fascinating story of Lowell Shephard as he bikes over 3000km's (!!!) across the the Japanese archipelago. I love how he recalls what seems like each and every encounter on his trip... maybe it's just me but I always feel as though it's these everyday interactions with people throughout this world that makes life so fascinating and Lowell does a great job of showing that.

My desire to someday make my way over to Japan has once again been heightened and although I may not decide to traverse it by bike, come down with bronchitis or be threatened by overly active volcanoes, I sure would love to see the cherry blossoms :)

Thank you for this great read and I look forward to creating my own memories in the near future.

A wonderful little gem of a book!

This book is packed full of wisdom, easy to read, with an elegant simplicity. It's an inspiring road map that has been clearly laid out and reminds us that we all have the ability to control our thoughts. We can let go of false and oppressive beliefs, and choose ways of looking at things that lead us in the happiest, most productive directions. Ancient philosophies have been re-translated into simple language anyone can understand using modern methods that are easy to follow.

I have tried to live my life being conscious of how my thinking and perspective affects my actions and relationships. This book is the perfect gift to share with friends, loved ones, and anyone who is struggling with life right now. Given the state of the world today, everyone needs to find peace and harmony and this book is a wonderful guide.
