About the Author
Dr. Stephen Burd is an Associate Professor at the University of New Mexico, where he has been teaching courses in management information systems, networks, databases, and hardware/software since 1984. The author of more than seven top-selling textbooks for Course Technology and Cengage Learning, Dr. Burd brings significant strengths and industry knowledge to this text. He received his B.B.A. and M.B.A. from the University of Baltimore and his Ph.D. from Purdue University.

If a more current version were available this would be great.

We were required to use this as a textbook because our professor wrote it. It's very sorely out of date, hence the 3 stars. However it's not poorly written, and I enjoyed it enough as a college textbook. If it were up to date/ relevant to today's technology, it would be a stand-out textbook for system architecture. Some things never change, and those things were well-covered as far as basics go. The text was well laid-out and easy to follow with plenty of diagrams.

Not a beginner's guide

The book becomes very technical and in-depth. It was a textbook I had to use for a class called IT Infrastructure. The first few chapters of the book were good as an overview and introduction to the topic of computer networking, however the book gets very historical in its descriptions and I found myself skipping across many paragraphs out of boredom. I'm not an IT major. This was an elective course for me. Perhaps my school did a bad job in choosing this textbook as the book for the course I took. In any event, I recommend this book for someone with a huge interest in the topic and/or for someone who already has a general knowledge of the topic. This is not really a 101 or even 201 type book. The book references things without previously defining them. I also found the exercises included at the chapter end to be at times somewhat difficult; the answers not always 100% found in the preceding text.

Good Condition, Saved $145 -- Book needs Work

BOOK CONDITION:
I purchased this book from Barnes & Noble because I needed it for a course,
however I did so without first checking Amazon for reviews or comparison prices.
Long story short, I paid almost $190 for a NEW book.
Fast Forwarding, I realized that I didn't even check Amazon. So I started searching.
All the reviews that I read pretty much said the book was Horribly Basic and
not at all worth the money. So I decided to buy what I thought would be a
"Cruddy" copy filled with highlightings and hideous notes. However after receiving
this book I see that there is virtually no markings in it and apart from a long line
across all of the pages, the book seems (pretty much) NEW.
On Top of that, I checked several random pages to make sure it was the right edition
and whatnot -- everything checked out perfectly. So now I intend to send the book
back to B&N and Save about $145.
NOTE #1: The only thing is that the COVER is not the "Official One", instead it is
a rather basic and bland cover with no back description and only the title, author, and edition
printed on the front. (See image below)
so if you are "Sheldon Cooper" crazy about having things be perfect then
you may just want to pay the extra $100 and get the official version.
NOTE #2:

BOOK QUALITY:
- This book is not at all well written, I am actually kinda upset that I actually bought it.
I am barely into the book, however I can already tell that this is going to be horribly boring
and that the content is extremely repetitive.
Here is an excerpt from chapter 1: (Please note, this is one Para
"Technical knowledge of computer harware and system software is needed
to perform many deployment tasks." (Technical knowledge is needed, OK got it)
"Installing and configuring hardware, networks, and system software is a specialized
task that requires a thorough understanding of the components being installed and the
purposes for which they'll be used." (Uhh, Technical knowledge is needed AND understanding, OK got it)
"Tasks such as formatting storage devices, setting up system security, installing and configuring
network services,and establishing accounting and auditing controls require considerable technical
expertise." (We Covered that already)
This big block of text essentially says the following
- You Need Technical Knowledge
- You Need Technical Knowledge
- You Need Technical Knowledge
In my opinion, the authors were trying so hard to sound sophisticated that
it over complicated an already complicated topic by hiding the content
behind repetitions and redundancies. Definitely needs a 7e
