Don't Waste Your Money (really)

The title and subtitle (The Hidden Meaning Behind People's Gestures and Expressions) give the unwary buyer the (false) impression that this is a book about reading people. In reality, it is a collection of... dreck, pure and simple.

The first paragraph of the (5-parted) Introduction explains how the author sold rubber sponges door-to-door. If the person who answered the door told Pease (the author) to go away but showed their palms, the author knew it was "safe to persist with their presentation" because the person answering the door "wasn't aggressive." If the person answering the door, however, told them in a soft voice to go away but used a pointed finger or a closed fist, Pease figured he had better leave. The author goes on to say how he became a salesperson and set all sorts of records.

The next (sub-)section of the introduction was entitled: "All Things Are Not What They Seem." What follows is a story about two idiots who, coming upon a hole in the ground, begin throwing heavier and larger items into the hole because they cannot hear things hit bottom. The last thing they toss into the hole is a railroad tie. Suddenly a goat comes "running out of the woods and jumps into the hole." Shortly after that a farmer appears and asks if they have seen a goat. They tell the farmer that yes, a goat just ran out of the woods and jumped into the hole. The farmer says, "That couldn't have been my goat. My goat was chained to a railway sleeper." (!) That is not just a cute lead-in to this section, it *is* the section. All of it. As a joke, maybe it gets a 1.5 (out of 10) on the laugh-o-meter. Sub-chuckle quality. In a book about body language, the reader should get more.

I then opened randomly to the body of the book. Pictures of JFK and Nixon (JFK on the left side of the picture) and Clinton and Blair (Clinton on the left side of the picture) and the author's assertion that the person standing on the left side of the picture has a 'dominant edge' over the other.. what? really? I thought this was a book about reading people...

Flip to another section - Hand-shaking - How to identify when someone is trying to dominate you with a handshake and how to out-dominate them (Walk across in front with your right leg and turn his palm up - p. 48)

Flip forward - "Eye Signals" section (p. 183) one third the way down the page are two lines separated from the text by dotted lines above and below the lines which read: "Why do men have trouble making eye contact? Breasts don't have eyes." Really? Isn't one of these authors a woman?

Flip back a couple of pages to the section about blinking (Page 179-180). According to the authors, people blink because the person is either bored, disinterested in you, or because they feel superior to you. The author suggests (seriously, I think) that if you believe the person is simply arrogant "when they've closed their eyes for the 3rd or 4th time, quickly step a pace to your left or right. When their eyelids lift again, it gives the illusion that you've disappeared and materialized in another place and this can really rattle them." Because we can all move several feet laterally in the blink of an eye...

Thus far, I've seen nothing about actually learning to read people. I've 'learned' about dominance in pictures, dominance in hand-shakes, arrogant blinking and the kind of trick that only The Flash could pull off. This is not a book about understanding body language. It is an attempt by two people who have made their livelihood in high-pressure sales jobs to make some money from the suckers who buy this book.

Given all of the fancy footwork 'moves' the authors suggest to their readers, I think they should write a book about how to dance.
I am convinced that if you listen to what people say and pay attention to what they do, they will tell you what they are about. In the introduction, we are told that "Things Are Not Always What They Seem." This book certainly isn't. Unfortunately I had already purchased the book from Amazon. If I had picked this book up in a bookstore, I would not have bought it. I seriously regret purchasing this book. I hope it at least burns well.

Scientific Validity Questionable

This book should be read with caution. The practical information here seems to be valid, although anecdotal. The book makes claims that they use "research" to support their "findings", but some of the research seems to be pure conjecture. The author most certainly cherry-picks studies with little credibility to support claims that are overly simplified or "cute". I also found many of Pease's remarks to be inherently sexist and outdated. Many of his claims out women talking more, and men being emotionally inept are simply not true given todays valid and peer-reviewed research. As a scientist I was mildly appalled by this book for one fact: It seems to provide scientific validity when there is none present. This is misleading, especially to the lay-person. I, for one, am not okay with the perpetuation of gender stereotypes for a humorous effect, especially when claims of "scientific proof" are being used incorrectly.

Ehhhhh.

After seeing high praise for this book, I was excited. After reading through half of it, I was less so.

This book is written almost as if for idiots. A LOT of it covers fairly obvious gestures that we all know about, it really is a matter of paying attention to these things. There are a number of topics that were introduced to me that I found rather interesting, not sure how much truth or relevance there is, but nevertheless was new grounds.

The fact that the book is heavily illustrated and includes many photographs of famous individuals makes this a quick and easy reference guide. But the writing of it is so basic, it makes me feel understimulated. The reading level is so low that this could very well be read by middle schoolers. Maybe that's a good thing for some, but for me it just cheapened the potential information I could get out of it. Don't expect to become an expert and knowing if a girl likes you or winning at poker games, etc. There is no ultimate definition of certain movements meaning certain things... there's a generality, and it's very interesting stuff but, if you feel you need something more in depth I would look at other literature and skip this very basic overview.

About the Author
"Eric Chaisson." Eric holds a doctorate in astrophysics from Harvard University, where he spent ten years on the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. For five years, Eric was a Senior Scientist and Director of Educational Programs at the Space Telescope Science Institute and Adjunct Professor of Physics at Johns Hopkins University. He then joined Tufts University, where he is now Professor of Physics, Professor of Education, and Director of the Wright Center for Innovative Science Education. He has written nine books on astronomy, which have received such literary awards as the Phi Beta Kappa Prize, two American Institute of Physics Awards, Harvard's Smith-Weld Prize for Literary Merit, and the Walter P. Kistler Book Award. He has published more than 100 scientific papers in professional journals, and has also received Harvard's Bok Prize for original contributions to astrophysics. "Steve McMillan." Steve holds a bachelor's and master's degree in Mathematics from Cambridge University and a doctorate in Astronomy from Harvard University. He held post-doctoral positions at the University of Illinois and Northwestern University, where he continued his research in theoretical astrophysics, star clusters, and numerical modeling. Steve is currently Distinguished Professor of Physics at Drexel University and a frequent visiting researcher at Princeton's Institute for Advanced Study and the University of Tokyo. He has published more than 50 scientific papers in professional journals.

I highly recommend all of the 6 books in the Maximize Your Potential series. They provide great insights, a higher level of looking at life, and many examples of people who have achieved great things as a result of a higher level of understanding. There are many great examples of prayers that can be utilized to assist one in overcoming any challenge in life.
They assist us in gaining a better understanding of who we are and our true relationship with God.

This second book was repeating a lot from the first book.

I found old copies of this series on my family bookshelf. Like 10 books or so. I haven't read all of them because: the first book in the series was great, the second was repeating a lot from the first, the third was repeating a lot from both the first and third. By the time I got to the end of the third book, I had the feeling that all that the author wanted to say, had already been said.

This is an excellent book filled with material that has literally changed my life. I was first introduced to the books of Joseph Murphy when I was about 20 years old, and I can say that he is one of my all time favorite spiritual authors. This book explains how the creative power of thoughts can be harnessed for the purpose of manifesting wealth and abundance. My favorite chapter is called "The Wonders of a Disciplined Imagination", and contains powerful information about creative visualization, which I use daily in my personal life. In making this argument, the book traces the transformation from ‘traditional’ to ‘new’ (or ‘third way’) social democratic parties in the UK, Sweden, France, Italy and Spain. It also outlines some of the most important developments in social democratic policy-making at the European level. The book therefore provides an in-depth, theoretically-original, analytical narrative of the key empirical developments to affect contemporary social democratic parties in recent years. In highlighting some of the contradictions inherent to both ‘traditional’ and ‘new’ social democratic parties, the book does much to suggest some of the reasons for their continued decline over the past three decades.

David Bailey completed his PhD at the London School of Economics, and currently teaches at the University of Birmingham. His research focuses on social democratic parties and European integration. He has published articles in the Journal of Common Market Studies, and Comparative European Politics.

It a great book, just not for kindle

Not-so-good for beginners

The book is amazing and includes some great tips on how-to...Illustrations are very pretty, the author is obviously talented...but that's about it for the good part...
If you are a beginner or do not have a background in arts you probably won't find that book very useful.
The author expects you to have the advanced drawing and painting skills, that's why he does not explain the details of line weight, texture making, color choosing (etc, you continue it:).
The other thing I did not like about the book is that the author uses the most advanced technology to create digital illustrations. I found myself struggling with applying his tips for using the tablet to my decent bamboo. He used and explained how to use the intuos cintiq which (unless you are a professional illustrator) you probably don't have (and you probably don't need it if digital drawing is just a hobby for you (costs about $2000)).
Anyways, great book for inspiration, and good tips for artists, although, beginners won't find the book that useful.

Inspiration, Impact & Technique

Well now. I start this review with a huge smile on my face. Because I really don't know how to review it. You'll see why - let's just dive in...

It's entitled How To Draw Zombies. The beginning section is really quite good in this respect - shows you how to draw your usual 'alive person' face and then how to hack bits off, distend, generally turn that face into an undead being. Trouble is here... I reckon you need to be pretty damn decent at drawing in the first place. I think it's assumed that you, the reader, know a bit about drawing already. You need to know what 'value' is and how to shade and highlight, how light and shadow works etc. So if you can't draw people, well, you might want to practice that first. If you come to this book as a complete beginner - you might be disappointed... I consider myself a definite learner and what was described as a rough sketch in the book - I would have considered a finished masterpiece and been chuffed to bits.

Scattered throughout the book are interesting snippets about zombie legend, recommended novels, how to surround yourself with inspiration. I really liked this aspect and did think it added to the overall feel of the book. Nice to learn a bit more and there were a few books I have now added to my read list.

There are 16 projects to work through, all thoroughly detailed and exquisite. I really like how each piece started as a physical sketch and each stage was shown. At the end there is an option to move onto the computer to enhance the finished piece with a program like Photoshop - again, I think you'd have to know a little bit about this type of program as it's not an in-depth going into. Just add this, do that, add some scabs here and some bits of vein there. No telling you how you actually do that. I do have to say that I sometimes preferred the finished piece pre-digital tampering and with others I did like the altered version.

Each project comes with a comprehensive list of tools used to complete that picture; the pens, pencils and paints used as well as optional extras like airbrush (though how to achieve similar effects with paint on a brush is explained) and Photoshop. I literally guffawed out loud when one of the suggested tools was a light table. Not a light box... a whole light table. I am lucky if my light bulb in the room I'm in is bright enough. I did find that amusing. The artist, Mike Butkus, has a seriously drool worthy studio with multiple PC screens, one of which he can draw directly onto with his pen... obviously us readers don't all have that set-up, he's just showing us how he works.

I cannot stress how much I love the amount of detail and information that's given about creating backgrounds in this book. I can seriously say I have learnt some things that will be so helpful in other projects. I knew window cleaner had to have a better use than just for cleaning boring windows. That gem alone... well, I almost kissed the page!

I come away from this book itching to be better at drawing and painting, I want to be able to do the techniques outlined in this book justice. I want to dabble with airbrushing and I may even finally crank open the free Photoshop Elements software that came with my PC. Methinks a drawing tablet may find it's way to my wishlist too - I don't think that coming away from a book with a hunger to learn something new is a bad thing.

So. You see. How do I rate this book? As a "How To draw..." you actually have to be able to draw to begin with, in my humble opinion. However, if you look at this book and imagine it in the same vein as the Dragon Art one I reviewed a while back - they described their book as "inspiration, impact and technique" and that's what this is too. So for that reason I highly recommend this book. Highly. If you love zombies, even if you aren't really wanting to draw them, the snippets of legend and lore, the recommended reads... the absolutely beautiful (in a blood splattered, gory kinda way) art make it a must have. If you want this purely to draw zombies and you are a complete beginner - you might come away disappointed but I really fail to see how if you are that into zombies.

A magical mystery tour!

A must read, can't put down: delightful, cleverly crafted, weaved and sutured story; told by a many talented veterinary surgeon who can write, that is for sure! Just like an unforgettable wine, the South Pacific or the Himalayas, it will linger, with you, mysteriously, for a long time. Who is 'Teemu Cullen' then? Could it be T.T.C?

Great Beginners Book

This book is very informative, well writen, and basic for new students of kabbalah and individuals interested in the subject. Kabbalah is a difficult topic to understand and learn. The author did a wonderful job by making it kabbalah easy to understand. I have read over 20 kabbalah books and would sometime have questions about the books I have read. I did not have that issue when i read this book, my questions were answered.

I also love the fact the author teaches you how to pronounce many of the jewish words. I will now pronounce the words correctly with the group of students I study kabbalah with.

As a kabbalah student I now understand the Tree of Life (Ten Sefirot) more from the book. I finally learned how to connect to it and the meaning about each sefirot.

I highly recommened this book, add it to your shopping cart right now. :)

Terrific

Not only does this book cover the basics of traditional Kabbalah, it explains meanings, has pronounciations, includes a few graphics and is nicely organized. It also delves slightly into the major branches of Judaism if one is unfamiliar, and shows how it's impossible to take the Torah away from Kabbalah and still find what you are seeking spiritually.

Torah and Kabbalah and Judaism go together. You can learn things from Kabbalah that might help you in your life, but you can't expect to live a lifestyle based on Jewish teachings if you're not living in accordance with Torah.

Great Insight

I bought this book for my mother a few months after she lost my sister to cancer. She couldent comprehend how this can happen to such a young person in life, especially her daughter. Naturally, she was really depressed and this book really helped her recover. She constantley talks about this book and how much it helps her understand why things like this happen in life. Her outlook on life has changed for the better. This is the best gift I could have given her.
