Fun and weird!

I sought this book out based on a review found on the Cirsova website, (...) connected tangentially to gaming blogger Jeffro Johnson's series on the original D&D "Appendix N" bibliography.
This fun, tight, easy read sits right on the borderland between science fiction and fantasy, and given the era of publication, might rightfully be described as weird fiction. While the overall plot screams tailor made for bottom-shelf VHS direct to video of the '70s and '80s, where bad science-fantasy, for some reason overwhelmingly made in Italy or Germany, made up many a late-night USA Network movie marathon. If you've seen the band Muse's video for "Knights of Cydonia," then you've seen the kind of movies I'm referring to. The writing for My Lord Barbarian though, easily leaps over those films, and it carries that unmistakable "weirdness" that seems to have really dropped off in speculative fiction in the 1990s and later. People tend to forget that the original setting for D&D hinted at a post-interstellar civilization, a far, far future setting that might explain the fantastical tropes, something often overlooked by modern day fandom just from lack of familiarity. It definitely hearkens back to what was even considered the "old school" in 1977, the era of pulp fiction, "after the fall" apocalypse, and concepts of human nature, history, society, courage virtue and evil based squarely on the canon of western civilization but also heroic fiction in general, which has its roots in Middle Eastern and many other cultures. Robert E. Howard's themes of barbarism versus civilization are revised here. The ending is especially satisfying, because it properly concludes the story based on those themes - it's not happy, it's not sad, it's not truly open-ended, it's just "correct." Characterization is fun, to put it bluntly, and while some readers might find the depiction of female characters, at least at first glance, disconcerting, I recommend you stick with it because you will be surprised. Not great literature, and it doesn't aspire to be; it's homage, done with respect and a little nudge-nudge wink-wink. Some might find the dialogue and descriptions "stilted" or awkwardly anachronistic, well, if that's the case, I would recommend watching a few episodes of Starz's "Spartacus" or the "Rome" series of a few years back - it's definitely deliberate, and done to set the mood but also the "boundaries" of the universe. It works in setting, it maintains consistency with the story. Recommended, read it in context of its time, and enjoy it.
