King, not one given to sequels, throws fans a big, bloody bone with this long-drooled-for follow-up to The Shining (1977). The events of the Overlook Hotel had resounding effects upon Danny Torrance, and decades later he’s a drunk like his father, wondering what his battle with the “ghosties” was even for. Dan still feels the pull of the shining, though, and it lands him in a small New England town where he finds friends, an AA group, and a job at a hospice, where his ability to ease patients into death earns him the moniker Doctor Sleep. Ten years sober, he telepathically meets the “great white whale” of shining—12-year-old Abra—who has drawn the attention of the True Knot, an evil RV caravan of �shining-eating quasi-vampires, one part Cooger & Dark’s Pandemonium Shadow Show and one part Manson’s dune-buggy attack battalion. Though the book is very poignantly bookended, the battle between Dan/Abra and the True’s “Queen Bitch of Castle Hell” is relegated to a psychic slugfest—not really the stuff of high tension. Regardless, seeing phrases like “REDRUM” and “officious prick” in print again is pretty much worth the asking price. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: Even for a King book, this is high profile. Stephen King crafts a brilliantly dark story that exceeds expectations as a sequel to one of his most classic novels

Somehow, after so many years, Stephen King was able to return to a character from his third novel, The Shining, and breathe life into him flawlessly.
Doctor Sleep follows Danny Torrance as an adult, and he is an extremely real, dynamic, and likeable character. Stephen King's ability to craft those kinds of characters has amazed me since the first book I read by him, and those who think he has lost his touch are terribly wrong, and are plainly missing out. This book is filled with great characters, and even the villains are hard not to like. I loved Abra, the young girl Danny comes across and who has a shining brighter than anyone has ever seen; I loved Danny--well, I guess I should get used to calling him Dan, since he's all grown up now--and found myself really caring and invested into him; I loved how dark the villains in the story were, even though their storyline wasn't nearly as interesting as that of Dan's and Abra's.
Doctor Sleep can be read as an independent novel, but I think it should be read more as a sequel to The Shining. Or... not so much a sequel, but a sort of sistering novel that is also a continuation of the character, Dan Torrance. I fell in love with this book and had to restrain myself from reading it all in one night because I wanted to draw it out. It may not be as scary or classic as The Shining, but it's still a fantastic read, deeply affecting, and in some ways, quite powerful. The single problem I could find with it was that i thought the return to the Colorado setting could've been done up a bit more, but it had a concise and smooth feel to it even so. And also, fans of the Shining will be delighted with the various nods to it found in this book, as are to be expected.

Is King getting soft?

We find out how the boy from The Shining turns out--he is the main character in Dr. Sleep.
In many novels, including King's, the protagonist is mistreated and put through the wringer. For a book to be interesting, characters have to be put in danger and suffer.
King even discusses this in Bag of Bones. Often times, characters are killed off to ratchet up the drama.
It happens here in Dr. Sleep. The characters are put in harm's way, but you get the idea that King is a little soft in this book. Trouble is quickly resolved for the good guys. There is risk, but they always get out of it without much damage.
The antagonist, however, gets the real business. A group of vampire like people roam the country, lead by a beautiful female leader. They are constantly losing people and suffering set backs. Plans go awry, key people are killed, and the entire group is in jeopardy.
Maybe King was going for this twist. Or maybe he let the good guys of the hook, and then to increase drama and make the book exciting, he tortured the bad guys instead.
The plot, setting, and the especially the characters are interesting. You do not feel short changed--this is a great read.
But you do sense that King let the good guys off easy, which made the ending less intense.

Holy crap! Holy effing crap

Holy crap! Holy effing crap! This book was all that I hoped it would be and more. It's been a long while ago that I read the Shinning but it didn't matter, things come back to you, and I didn't even really need to read the Shinning to get this book. To me, it can be read as a stand alone. I'm so glad that Stephen King was moved to write Danny's book, that I got to see him as an adult and see how the aftermath of what happened to him and his mother in the Overlook Hotel. Taking it all back to his shinning and adding even more mysterious and ghostly things. I'm always pleasantly surprised when a book can get one over on me, it doesn't happen often, and it did in Doctor Sleep, a few times. This is a must read book if you're a Stephen King fan, if you've read The Shinning or not or if you just want to read a really freaking awesome book!
